history

In the Lutheran village of Laatzen, which has been Lutheran since the Reformation , there were only a few Catholics until the end of the 19th century. That changed with the sudden population growth through the settlement of industrial companies after the First and through the development of the exhibition center and the influx of displaced persons after the Second World War .

Initially, the Catholics in Laatzen belonged to the St. Bernward Church in Döhren , consecrated in 1893 , then from 1922 to St. Michael in Wülfel .

1937 in Laatzen-West laid the foundation for the St. Mathilde Church was laid, followed on March 13, 1938 Bishop Joseph Godehard making their consecration . The church at Eichstrasse 16 was named after St. Mathilde . On October 1, 1954, St. Mathilde became a curate and on October 1, 1965, the parish church.

Around this time, today's Laatzen-Mitte district emerged , while new building areas grew on Kronsberg and Bemerode . This development made it necessary to build a new large church further east. On December 22, 1975, the 4th Sunday in Advent, the foundation stone was laid by Vicar General Adalbert Sendker. The St. Oliver Church, consecrated in 1977, has been the parish church for the area of the city of Laatzen including Gleidingen ( Filialkirche St. Josef ) and some neighboring villages with currently (2011) 5890 Catholics since 1982 . From 1993 to 2006, the later auxiliary bishop Heinz-Günter Bongartz was pastor at St. Oliver's Church. Since 2008 the parish has been supported by the "Friends of the Catholic Church Community St. Oliver, Laatzen eV".
