St. Joseph Church

The Sankt Josef Church is the Catholic church in Gleidingen , a district of the city of Laatzen in the Hanover region in Lower Saxony . The listed church belongs as a branch church to the Laatzener parish of St. Oliver , in the Hannover deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . The church named after St. Joseph of Nazareth is located on the western outskirts of Gleidingen, in the street “Zum Anger 8” (corner of Neuenbergsweg).

history

After Gleidingen with its St. Gertruden Church had become Protestant in the 16th century through the introduction of the Reformation , Catholics did not settle in Gleidingen again until the 19th century, triggered by industrialization . They were workers, especially from Upper Silesia . At that time, Gleidingen belonged to the Holy Trinity parish in Ruthe, about three kilometers away .

First, in 1913, a Catholic school was built in Gleidingen on Oesselser Straße. From 1914 until the church was built, the school also held Catholic services.

On March 1, 1938, the construction of the church began on February 19 In 1939 their benediction by Bishop Joseph Godehard making . On June 3, 1942, one of the two bells had to be handed in for war purposes. On September 22, 1943, the church was damaged in the air raids on Hanover .

On April 29, 1973, the Josef-Godehard-Heim was consecrated as a parish home next to the church. Since January 1st, 1982 the church belongs to the parish of St. Oliver in Laatzen, until then it belonged to the parish in Ruthe. On May 1, 2007, the church's membership of the deanery changed from the deanery Hanover-Mitte / Süd to the then newly founded deanery Hanover.

Architecture and equipment

The church was built as a single-nave brick structure according to plans by the Hildesheim architect Johannes Fricke. The chancel is dominated by a crucifix , statues depicting Mary and Joseph.
