Steinkrug is a locality in the village of Bredenbeck (municipality of Wennigsen (Deister) / Hanover region ) with 201 inhabitants.

Location and traffic

Steinkrug is surrounded by forest on three sides on the southeastern edge of the Deister . It is located about one kilometer southeast of Bredenbeck and about one kilometer west of Bennigsen . The four-lane B 217 , which is separated by noise barriers , leads past Steinkrug to the west . The main road ran through the village until 2000. For Expo 2000 today local bypass was completed. To the west of the village lies a former quarry in the forest , which apparently gave its name to Steinkrug in connection with a jug as a rural restaurant . Two bus routes of the Greater Hanover transport link Steinkrug from two stops with neighboring towns.

history

In the Deister around Steinkrug there are numerous barrows that indicate the early settlement of the area. To the south of the Steinkrüger sports field lie the remains of the Bennigser Burg under forest .

Street

Steinkrug is first mentioned in a document in 1750, but was probably formed as early as the 17th century as a settlement for quarry and forest workers. A country road from Hanover to Hameln has passed here as a pass road over the Deister since 1670 . In 1771 it was expanded into Hamelner Chaussee and is considered the first art street of the later Kingdom of Hanover . It connected the royal seat of Hanover with the Hameln fortress of the Electorate of Hanover . The Hamelner Chaussee was the forerunner of the B 217 and at Steinkrug corresponded to the course of the main road before the bypass was created.

Inn

As early as the 17th century, there was a rural restaurant on the Landstrasse, which served as a post office for changing riders and horses. It was also an overnight hostel for carters with horse-drawn vehicles. Over the course of time, the location expanded through additions and was fundamentally rebuilt by the Hanoverian court architect Georg Ludwig Laves in 1850. In the 19th century, the Steinkrug restaurant developed into a popular restaurant on the Deister. In 1976 the 52 meter long building was rebuilt and completely renovated in 2000.

Glassworks

From 1809 the Steinkrug glassworks , founded by Baron Wilhelm Carl Ernst Knigge (1771–1839) from Gut Bredenbeck, was built on the estate. In 1839 the 13 meter high glassworks tower, also known as the “English tower”, was built on the smelter site . Today it is one of the few remaining examples in Europe. With 20 to 50 employees in the glassworks, the number of Steinkrugs residents increased significantly in the 19th century. At the economic height of the hut around 1900, up to 120 people were employed. The glassmakers lived with their family members in workers' houses on the factory premises. Between 1869 and 1928 there was a school in Steinkrug, which was mainly attended by the children of the glassmakers . There are listed buildings around the site, including the former ornithological station. In 2010, the council of the Wennigsen municipality passed the resolution for a development plan . The land around the glassworks is to be rearranged and built upon at the instigation of the landowners. The old walls are to give way in part.
