The Waldkater is a locality in Wennigsen in the municipality of Wennigsen (Deister) . It is located west of the village on the edge of the Deister .

Settlement structure

The Waldkater is connected to Wennigsen by the Hülsebrinkstraße. It consists of only five streets with predominantly single-family houses. One of them is the eponymous Am Waldkater , which is located directly on the edge of the forest. The eastern part of the Waldkater was developed in the 1970s as a high-priced residential area in a prime scenic location on the Deister. The western and southern parts have villas that were built around the turn of the century. Part of the Waldkater is on leasehold land owned by the Hanover Monastery Chamber . In December 2011, around 220 people lived in Waldkater.

Landscape protection

The Waldkater is surrounded by the H-23 Norddeister landscape protection area in the Hanover region . Only the residential area is excluded from the LSG regulation. The Waldkaterbach is particularly worthy of protection as one of the Deister brooks, which can be preserved due to its water quality and its largely natural course.

Natural monuments

Due to its proximity to the forest, the Waldkater is home to two of eleven registered natural monuments in the municipality:

  • Imperial oak : The natural monument ND-H 153 of the Hanover region is a tall solitary plant in the forest area. The pedunculate oak is said to have received its name at the time the empire was founded in 1871.
  • Goat oak: The natural monument ND-H 8 of the Hanover region is an oak standing on the edge of the forest, which is unique in the Calenberger Land due to its trunk size and age . In the meantime, however, their crown has been reduced in size due to storm damage.

The Forstmeister-Bank-Allee is also noteworthy. Around 120 old horse chestnuts and 42 maples line this 1.6 km long avenue. This was laid out in 1900 by the former forestry worker forester Fritz Bank, a co-founder of the Wennigsen Transport and Improvement Association. The Scharnhorst Monument stands in the middle . The avenue leads along Hülsebrinkstraße, past the forest car park to Forstmeister Bank Platz, a monument in his honor. In the upper section through the Deisters forest there are only a few chestnuts left. Due to their age and the infestation with the leaf miner , the felling and replacement of trees is currently being discussed.

Recreation

The Finnhütten on a calm day

The forest hangover is a popular destination in Deister. A hotel, restaurant and café built in 1906 existed until after the Second World War , before the Waldkater became a pure place of residence after it was closed. Even today, it is the starting point for hikes in the Deister due to its hiking car park, which was built with the support of the Hanover region . To the north of Waldkater are the Finnhütten, a holiday camp of the city of Hanover.
