Wennigsen water park

The Wennigsen water park is an artificially created swimming lake in the municipality of Wennigsen (Deister) . It was created through the work of a citizens' initiative that responded to the closure of the communal outdoor pool . It is located in the LSG-H-31 Norddeister landscape protection area in the Hanover region .

When the water park opened in 2000, it was the first of its kind in northern Germany. It is still one of the largest man-made natural baths in northern Germany. A regeneration pond uses autochthonous aquatic plants to clean the water naturally; chemicals can be dispensed with. The treated water is returned to the large swimming pond via a spring pond. This is divided into a swimmer and a non-swimmer area. All around there are extensive lawns lined with trees. There is a diving rock as well as a swimming island and a small waterfall . In addition to some play equipment, there is a large sand field for children, which can be turned into a large mud field with the help of a child-safe water pump.

The municipality of Wennigsen (Deister) subsidizes the water park with 100,000 euros per year. The park is used by around 20,000 visitors each season.

The former municipality of Wennigsen had already built an outdoor swimming pool in 1927 on the site of the water park. It cost 18,000 Reichsmarks (the equivalent of around 66,000 euros today) and was fed with fresh Deister water.
