The Masala World Beat Festival is a German festival for world music . Every year around 5,000 people attend the concerts of the main program and another 15,000 visit the open-air event Masala World Market. The festival takes place every year in summer for mostly nine days in the Lower Saxony state capital Hanover and in the Hanover region.

description

For the first time, the largest North German world music festival was held in 1995 in the pavilion cultural center . Since then, the concerts have taken place in the pavilion cultural center, on the adjacent Andreas-Hermes-Platz, but also in selected locations in the Hanover region, such as the H. Warnecke grain distillery in Bredenbeck , Landestrost Castle in Neustadt am Rübenberge or on the estate Adolphshof in the Hämelerwald. The founders are the head of the pavilion, Christoph Sure, and Gerd Kespohl , who was a booker in the pavilion cultural center until 2018, but will also head the Masala Festival afterwards.

The name of the event goes back to the Indian term masala , which describes a hot Indian mixture of spices. The organizers of the festival declare that their program is just as diverse and permeated by various cultural influences as the mixture of spices.

The festival mainly presents international artists, but also German musicians. While the festival's focus in the early years was on African music, the musical spectrum has been expanded since 2007 and adapted to the changing tastes of the public. The festival now alternates between traditional, puristic world music and modern influences. In addition to folklore , jazz , blues and fado, there is reggae , ska dancehall , gypsy as well as hip-hop and cumbia . There are now also music groups that mainly present electronic music . Since 1995 more than 300 different artists from over 80 countries have been guests. Big international stars of world music like Gilberto Gil from Brazil , Salif Keita , Habib Koité and Fatoumata Diawara from Mali , Pat Thomas from Ghana , Christina Branco from Portugal , Tony Allen from Nigeria , Doctor Krapula from Colombia , Babylon have already been on the MASALA stage Circus from France , but also German musicians like Meret Becker and Bukahara.

In addition to the concerts of the main program, the festival offers an extensive supporting program, which has been linked to a main topic since 2016. Readings, exhibitions, discussions, theater performances and workshops take place under this theme. In 2016 the festival was dedicated to the topic of "Air", in 2017 to "Borders" and in 2018 a circus spectacle in combination with world music was organized under the topic of "World Music Circus".

The festival traditionally ends with the world market, which takes place on the last weekend of the festival. Dance groups from Hanover as well as international and Hanoverian musicians perform at the free open-air event. There is international street food , handicrafts and family programs.
