history

Wennigsen Willich map from 1751

The oldest known street name is Steinstraße . This is likely due to the early expansion as a cobblestone road. Around 1751 it formed the southern edge of the development of the place, only at the intersection with the road to Argestorf there were 2 houses on the southern side of the street. Also in the area north of the intersection with the street Im Bährenkamp (today Bährenkampstraße ) it formed the end of the development, on its western side there were only a few houses that were directly on the street. The current section north of the intersection with Neustadtstrasse (then Auf der Neustadt ) and Barsinghäuser Strasse did not exist at that time.

On September 18, 1874, one of the so-called imperial maneuvers was held in Wennigsen. In the presence of Emperor Wilhelm I and his two successors Friedrich III. and Wilhelm II a troop parade took place in the street. The street was then renamed Kaiserstraße . Another renaming followed during the Nazi era . A large number of inner-city streets in Wennigsen were given names associated with the dictatorship. The main street became the street of the SA until 1945 . After the war, the section from Argestorfer Strasse to the Hülsebrinkstrasse intersection was given its current name. The northern part, from the intersection with Hülsebrinkstrasse, was called Deisterstrasse . Since there was already a Deisterstraße in Bredenbeck in the course of the incorporation of the surrounding villages , the northern part was also renamed Hauptstraße.

Architectural monuments

Bunny house

House from 1862

At Hauptstraße 16 there is a residential and commercial building from 1862. It is a neo-Gothic , two-storey Wilhelminian style building in red clinker. The design comes from Conrad Wilhelm Hase , the architect of the Marienburg . It was a retail store that was gradually expanded in the 19th and 20th centuries. Originally it housed the Meyer brothers' retail store founded in 1856 , later the Gustav Nolting company . An electronics shop is still housed in the western extension. It is privately owned.

Former forester's house

Old forester's house

The former monastery forest house is in Hauptstrasse 37; the associated barn and gardens can be found in house number 35. After the Wennigsen office became independent in 1817, the forester's house with the associated ancillary facilities was built in 1830. The main building is now a private residence. An inn is housed in the former barn. Opposite the converted barn is the big stone , which used to point the way to the hard coal mines in the Deister .

Former district court

With the establishment of the Wennigsen office in 1852, the administrative district received its own court for civil matters and voluntary jurisdiction. Eight years later the first building of the Wennigs district court was opened. It is in Hauptstrasse 39 and is now used as a practice and residential building. The new district court is not far from it, on the corner of Hauptstrasse and Hülsebrinkstrasse.

Redevelopment area

Archaeological excavations 2020

The main street is part of the redevelopment area of Wennigsen town center . The aim is the extensive renovation of the town center. After an integrated urban development concept (ISEK) had been drawn up, the construction work began in March 2020 in the area of the central intersection (colloquially, the Heitmüller intersection ). Both the above-ground and underground infrastructure will be renewed. The measure should be completed in 2022. Archaeological explorations are also carried out in this context. These led u. a. to find the remains of the bridge of the stream crossing that is listed in the plan from 1751.

traffic

The main road as the inner-city main road currently carries a traffic load of around 5500 to 6100 vehicles per day. The road was stepped from a state road to a municipal road in the 1990s and is limited to a speed of 30 km / h. It is one of the main shopping streets in the community. There are two bus stops at it. It is also part of the cycling action program of the Wennigsen (Deister) community.
