Thick stone in Wennigsen

The “ Dicke Stein” is a signpost and a mining monument built in 1828 in the municipality of Wennigsen . The stone is entered in the list of architectural monuments in the Hanover region . He is in the Hülsebrinkstrasse in front of today's Wennigsen District Court .

The sandstone block bears the inscription Weg zu den Steinkohlebergwerken im Deister / 2 1/3 miles from Hanover / 1827 . A yellow hand points in the direction of Wennigser Mark. It was probably set up when the mines at Hülsebrink went out of service. The origin of the stone is disputed. According to Wüllner's local chronicle, it could come from a stone mountain between Bönnigsen and Knölkenbrücke or from the Deister .

Trivia

The stone once stood in front of the building at Hauptstraße 35, supposedly to direct the coal carters to Georgsplatz (to the north) instead of to Hülsebrink (to the west). However, since it was implemented during the redesign of the crossing area around 1970, it has been pointing to Hülsebrink.

An adjacent restaurant also bore the name Zum Dicken Stein . After it was used as a pub, an autonomous residential and leisure project was set up there . Before the building was demolished in October 1994, there was a massive police presence. However, the residents left it peacefully.
