Hartbert as the 27th Bishop of Hildesheim on a painting with medallions depicting all Hildesheim bishops up to the end of the 18th century; Latin inscription: “He founded the St. Johannis monastery [in Hildesheim]. He redeemed many pledged goods. He built a lot. "

Hartbert was Bishop of Hildesheim from 1199 to 1216.

In his office he was involved in decisions that influenced the history of various localities in Lower Saxony .

The oldest piece of information about Wennigsen (Deister) can be found in a document from the bishop - between 1199 and 1206 - only a 13th-century copy of the Amelungsborn monastery has been copied . This document certifies that Count Bernhard von Poppenburg from Wennigsen renounces the administration of the salt works in Swalenhusen near Hemmendorf , which the Amelungsborn monastery had transferred to his father .

Bishop Hartbert also moved the Augustinian monastery from Holle to Derneburg between 1209 and 1213 . As a result, the Derneburg monastery developed into the largest landowner in the county of Holle at the beginning of the 13th century .
