Gerhard I of Schauenburg

Gerhard von Schauenburg (* after 1297; † January 1, 1352 or 1353) was Bishop of Minden from 1346 to 1352 or 1353 . Later he was referred to as Minden Bishop also as Gerhard I , to distinguish him from later bishops named Gerhard.

Gerhard was a count from the house of Schauenburg , more precisely of the Holstein-Schauenburg line and is therefore sometimes listed as Gerhard von Holstein-Schauenburg or Gerhard von Holstein. Gerhard was the first of numerous Minden bishops from the house of Schaumburg. Gerhard's father was Count Adolf VI. of Holstein-Schauenburg-Pinneberg († 1315). Adolf VI. was the ruling Count of Holstein-Pinneberg from 1290 until his death. His mother was Helene von Sachsen-Lauenburg . Gerhards eponymous nephew Gerhard was as Gerhard II. 1361-1366 also Bishop of Minden. Gerhard I's brother Erich († October 21, 1350) was counter-bishop of Heinrich III. of Braunschweig-Lüneburg in the diocese of Hildesheim .

Gerhard had been canon of Minden since at least 1300 and as dean of the cathedral chapter since 1338 . In Hildesheim and Halberstadt he was a canon at the local cathedral monuments .

From 1346 Gerhard I was bishop of Minden until his death on January 1, 1352 or 1353. He was buried in Minden Cathedral . His grave slab is now placed in the cloister. Shortly before his death, he was able to take possession of Rahden Castle for the diocese. The year of his death is not certain. The episcopal chronicles name 1353, the grave slab January 1, 1352.
