The Royal Chapel ( Kaplica Królewska in Polish ) is a building in Gdańsk's old town and is located in the immediate vicinity of St. Mary's Church .

history

The Royal Chapel was completed in 1681. It was created after the adjoining St. Mary's Church was reserved for members of the Protestant community in Gdańsk. Since the Catholic Church no longer had a house of worship in the city, the Polish King John III donated. Sobieski paid a larger sum to enable the construction of the new church for the Gdańsk Catholics.

It is believed that the Royal Chapel was designed by the royal architect Tylman van Gameren . The building sculptures come from Andreas Schlüter .

The baroque Royal Chapel has a main dome flanked by two smaller domes and two side gabled houses.
