Tylman van Gameren (also Tilman von Gameren , Tylman z Gameren , Tylman Gamerski ) (* 1632 in Utrecht , † 1706 in Warsaw ) was a Polish architect and engineer of Dutch origin.

Life

Trained as a student of Jacob van Campen, he soon went to Italy for further training . There he met the Polish prince Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski in 1660 , who won him over as a civil engineer for his fortifications. He initially began a military career as an artillery officer, but soon worked for the Polish court of King Michał Korybut Wiśniowieckis and his successor John III. Sobieski . As a court architect, he built numerous castles, churches, manors and parks over the course of thirty years, especially in and around Warsaw . As a representative of a classical movement, he became one of the most important architects of the Baroque in Central and Northern Europe. In addition to around 70 buildings, he left behind numerous books and drawings on his death, some of which were destroyed in World War II.
