The Antonius Church in Czerniaków is a Baroque church building on Ulica Czerniakowska 2/4 in today's Warsaw district of Mokotów (Sadyba).

Building history

The church, consecrated to St. Anthony of Padua , was built between 1687 and 1689 by Isidoro Tommaso Affeita based on a design by Tylman van Gameren as the foundation of the Great Crown Marshal Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski - at the same time as the St. Bernard monastery complex attached to it. The interior and the altars were also designed by Gameren, from 1688 to 1693 by the plasterers and painters Francesco Antonio Giorgioli , F. Maino and others. a. executed. The paintings in the nave depict scenes from the life of St. Anthony, those in the presbytery the story of the construction of the church and the collection of an image of St. Anthony from Venice . Andreas Schlueter created the sculptures . The triptych "Lamentation of Christ" comes from the workshop of Quentin Massys . The floor plan of the building corresponds to a Greek cross , the church is crowned by a dome and has an attached octagonal presbytery (mausoleum of St. Boniface).

The church - an outstanding example of sacred architecture in Poland in the 17th century - is a St. Bernard Church ( Franciscan Observant ) and belongs to the parish of St. Boniface .

Between 1715 and 1735, under Francesco Ceroni, a comprehensive restoration was carried out for the first time by a foundation from Elżbieta Sieniawska. The frescoes were repaired from 1951 to 1954 by Ryszard Politowski and Tadeusz Romanowski under the direction of Bohdan Marconi . Another renovation took place between 1957 and 1963.
