Bohdan Marconi

Bohdan Lucjan Marconi (born January 14, 1894 in Warsaw , † January 15, 1975 ibid) was a Polish painter, conservator and restorer of paintings and a university lecturer.

Marconi was the son of Władysław Marconi and his wife Kazimiera Eleanora (1859-1934). His grandfather was the Italian architect Enrico Marconi , who immigrated to Poland , and his great-grandfather was the architect and painter Leandro Marconi, who worked in Mantua and Bologna . Marconi's sister Halina Maria (1888–1952) was the wife of Stanisław Łoza. His father's brothers were the painter Karol Antoni Marconi and the architect Leandro Marconi . Marconi's wife was Zofia (1896–1988). The couple had two daughters. The family grave is located in the Protestant cemetery (Polish: Cmentarz Ewangelicko-Reformowany ) in Warsaw- Wola .

Life

After graduating from high school, Marconi first studied violin at the Berlin Conservatory . In 1904 he began to study painting at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris , which he completed at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw under the direction of Miłosz Kotarbiński and Wojciech Kossak . In 1917 he took part in concerts at the National Philharmonic in Warsaw.

In 1918 he joined the army to fight in the Polish-Soviet war on the Lithuanian-Belarusian front. He completed training at the Cadet Infantry School (Polish: Szkoła Podchorążych Piechoty ) and at the Cadet School of Motorized Units (Polish: Szkoła Podchorążych Wojsk Samochodowych ).

From September 1922 he worked as a caricaturist and subsequently (until 1951) as a conservator and restorer of painting in the Warsaw National Museum .

During the German occupation he tried unsuccessfully to save the ceilings of the royal castle in Warsaw. As an employee of the National Museum, he witnessed the destruction of the city following the failed Warsaw Uprising and the destruction of cultural assets by German troops. He later published his memories of it in the essay collection “The Art of Conservation”.

In 1947, Marconi was appointed professor at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts , where he taught painting conservation.
