Martin Woodcock

Martin Wedgwood Woodcock (born January 14, 1935 in Sidcup , Kent , † February 24, 2019 in North Norfolk ) was a British animal illustrator.

life and work

Influenced by Archibald Thorburn and George Edward Lodge , Woodcock taught himself to draw. From 1974 he worked as a professional animal illustrator. In 1975 his first work was published by Collins Publishing under the title A Field Guide to the Birds of South-east Asia . From 1983 he worked as a freelance artist and author. In 1986 Woodcock became a member of the Society of Wildlife Artists . In January 1994 he became president of the African Bird Club, an organization dedicated to the protection of the African avifauna. From 1982 to 2004 he worked as an illustrator for the standard work The Birds of Africa . Woodcock had depicted over 3000 species of birds on 550 color panels. He mainly worked with watercolors , gouache and oil paints .

Woodcock died on February 24, 2019 of complications from cancer that was diagnosed in 2018.
