Alan C. Kemp

Alan Charles Kemp (born May 7, 1944 in Gweru , Rhodesia ) is a Zimbabwean ornithologist . His research focus is the African hornbills .

Life

Kemp is the son of Michael Henry and Valeska Sylvia Kemp, née von Memerty. In 1965 he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and Entomology and in 1966 a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Zoology from Rhodes University . From November 1966 to April 1969 he was a research assistant to Tom Cade of Cornell University during an ornithological study in Kruger National Park . From June 1969 he worked at the Transvaal Museum in Pretoria , initially as a curator, from 1971 as head of the bird department and from 1974 to August 1999 as scientific director and chief curator. In 1973 he was with the dissertation The ecology, behavior and systematics of Tockus hornbills (Aves: Bucerotidae) Conducted Mainly in the Kruger National Park at Rhodes University for Ph.D. PhD.

From September 1999 until his retirement in July 2001 he was a manager at the Transvaal Museum.

Kemp has been married to Margaret Irene Thwaites since February 1968, whom he met at Rhodes University. The couple have a son and a daughter.

In 1974, Kemp and his wife published the Report on a Study of Hornbills in Sarawak, with Comments on Their Conservation , which was carried out on behalf of WWF Malaysia. In 1976 Kemp wrote the work A study of the ecology, behavior and systematics of Tockus hornbills: (Aves: Bucerotidae) . In 1987 he and his wife published the books Birds of the National Parks of South Africa and Birds of the Transvaal . In 1995 the book The Hornbills: Bucerotiformes came out, which was illustrated by Martin Woodcock . In 1998 the book Sasol Birds of Prey of Africa and Its Islands was published in collaboration with his wife . In 1999, together with Joseph Michael Forshaw , he wrote the chapter on the kingfishers, hornbills, spinach, racks and relatives in the book Encyclopedia of Birds , which was published in the German translation Enzyklopädie der Vögel by Bechtermünz Verlag. In 1994, Kemp wrote the chapter on the secretary in volume two, and in 2001 wrote the chapter on hornbills in volume six of the Handbook of the Birds of the World . In 2013, Kemp published the book Hornbills of the World: A Photographic Guide .

Dedication names

In 2000, Bernard Treca and Christian Érard named the subspecies Tockus erythrorhynchus kempi of the red-billed coconut after Kemp, which is sometimes viewed as a separate species.
