Joannes Augustinus Paredis (born August 28, 1795 in Bree , † June 18, 1886 in Roermond ) was the Catholic Bishop of Roermond .

Life

Joannes Paredis was ordained a priest on June 7, 1821. Pope Gregory XVI appointed him on June 2, 1840 as Vicar Apostolic of the Apostolic Vicariate Limburg and on November 24, 1840 titular Bishop of Hirina . On June 30, 1841, he was consecrated bishop by Cornelius Ludovicus de Wijkerslooth in the cathedral of Roermond. His episcopal motto was "Auspice Deo" - "Under God's providence".

On March 4, 1853, the Apostolic Vicariate Limburg was raised to the Diocese of Roermond and Pope Pius IX. appointed Paredis as diocesan bishop. As a reflex of personal experiences he chose the new motto “In cruce salus” - “In the cross is salvation”. Joannes Paredis died on June 18, 1886 at the age of 90 in the episcopate.

He supported the German missionary Arnold Janssen in founding the Steyler Missionaries . In Germany in the 1870s it was not possible to found a monastery because of the Kulturkampf . In his Dutch diocese Roermond he took on Arnold Janssen and supported him.
