Wulf Gatter

Wulf Hermann Gatter (* 1943 ) is a German forest ecologist and ornithologist .

Live and act

Gatter was born in 1943 as the son of the Sudeten German politician and automobile designer Willibald Gatter . He studied forestry at the Rottenburg University and at the Forest Research Institute in Stuttgart-Weilimdorf. Gatter is the founder and head of the Randecker Maar research station and from 1990 to 2008 was head of the ecological teaching area of ​​the Baden-Württemberg State Forest Administration (Swabian Alb).

From 1981 to 1984 Wulf Gatter worked as a forester in development cooperation and rainforest research in Liberia, West Africa. Since the 1980s, numerous research trips have taken him to the West African rainforest areas of the Gola, Lofa and Nimba mountains, to the island mountains of Grand Gedeh County and to the mangrove belt of the Liberian coast. In Grand Gedeh he discovered the rare fleckflügelbülbül Phyllastrephus leucolepis in 1981 and in 1988 described the unknown youthful clothes of the white-breasted guinea fowl (Agelastes meleagrides). In 1993 he described the biology of the rare Ballmann weaver (Malimbus ballmanni) and in 1997 published the standard work on Liberian ornithology "Birds of Liberia".

In 1985 he founded the Society for the Conservation of Nature of Liberia (SCNL) with Liberian environmental activists, the West African country's first nature conservation society. In 1986, Gatter followed a call from WWF to develop an infrastructure program for Sapo National Park, the second largest rainforest national park in West Africa. The aim was to preserve the resources of this uninhabited area and at the same time ensure the survival of the inhabitants of the outskirts of the park (farmers, hunters). In cooperation with the Liberian forest administration, he built the Gbabony Creek research station here.

Also in 1986, on behalf of Birdlife International, Gatter researched the wintering of Euro-Asian river and seabirds on the 600 kilometer long coastline of Liberia, in the lagoons, on the tidal river underflows and the mangrove areas.

In cooperation with the Africa working group of the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU), Gatter has been promoting field research and theses by young Liberians on the ecology of the rainforest and bird migration since the 1990s. In 2003 he received an honorary doctorate from this university for his African research activities and his work in the reconstruction of the University of Liberia after the civil war. In 2004 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Wilhelms University of Münster for his "long-term and internationally recognized research work on bird migration and bird populations in Central Europe and Africa" ​​- in particular for his pioneering work on population dynamics of European birds ("Vogelzug und Bird populations in Central Europe. 30 years of observation of the day migration on the Randecker Maar ”).

Gatter is chairman of the local group Kirchheim / Teck and Lenninger Tal of the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU). His main interests are forest and population ecology, predation and competition and the resulting connections as well as the migration of birds and insects - especially with regard to climate change - topics on which he has written numerous articles.
