Johannes Erritzøe (born April 4, 1934 in Faaborg , Denmark ) is a Danish ornithologist , taxidermist , bird illustrator and author.

Life

Erritzøe is the son of Per B. and Ellen Erritzøe, née Pyndt. His father was a pastor. After completing his training at the Zoological Museum at the University of Copenhagen , Johannes Erritzøe opened his own preparation shop in 1954. Since the demand for animal preparations in schools and museums was often very high at the time, Erritzøe's company with its seven employees, which even fulfilled international orders, became the largest of its kind in Denmark in the early 1960s. In the 1960s Erritzøe went on scientific excursions to Greece, Turkey and Africa. In 1969 he gave up the business and went to Germany. He became head of the then leading German specialist for zoological preparation and dermaplasty, the Peters Tierpräparation company in Hamm , where the most important customers were mainly big game hunters . In 1973 Erritzøe moved to Sønderjylland , where he continued his profession as a taxidermist together with his wife Helga Boullet Erritzøe, who is of German descent and who works as an author and illustrator. In 1974 Erritzøe was one of the three founders of the Danish Zoological Conservators' Association, where he was Vice-President for twelve years. For several years Erritzøe was a board member of the Sønderjylland local department of Dansk Ornitologisk Forening . From 2000 to 2012, he was the editor of this association's magazine in the “New Books” section. Erritzøe is a member of 23 international ornithological organizations, including the British Ornithologists 'Union , the American Ornithologists' Union , Birdlife Australia and, since 1965, the German Ornithologists Society . Erritzøe has been a research fellow at the University of Alaska Museum since 2001 . In 2003 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Alaska Fairbanks for his services in avian research .

Erritzøe is the author of around 55 scientific articles and five books, including The Birds of CITES and How to Identify Them (1993) and Pittas of the World (1998), both illustrated by himself and his wife, and the Working Bibliography of Cuckoos and Turacos of the World (2000), The Ornithologist's Dictionary or Ornithological and Related Technical Terms For Layman and Expert (2007) and Cuckoos of the World (2012). The latter was illustrated by Martin Woodcock and Richard Allen and was named Birdbook of the Year by the British magazine Birdwatch . In 2004 he wrote the chapter on the family of the Pittas (Pittidae) in Handbook of the Birds of the World . Erritzøe's scientific articles deal, for example, with the gender differences in the distribution of long-eared owls during the winter months in Denmark and neighboring countries, with the study of 1000 house sparrow hides collected at different times of the year during the 1960s, with the study of birds that were killed in traffic accidents, and with a sex change in a female peacock .
