Gesine Meißner (born February 22, 1952 in Uelzen ) is a German politician of the FDP , a former member of the Lower Saxony state parliament . From 2009 to 2019 she was a member of the European Parliament .

education and profession

After graduating from high school in Soltau in 1970, Meißner trained as a hotel manager at the hotel management school on Tenerife . After working for one year at the reception and in personnel management in a guest house in Munich, she studied German , English , musicology , nutritional science , housekeeping and education in Munich and Hanover . In 1980 she passed her state examination for teaching at vocational schools . Afterwards she was deputy director of rural adult education in Lower Saxony eV until 1993 and then an independent communication trainer.

politics

Meißner has been a member of the FDP since 1985 and has held various functions at different levels since then. Until 2016 she was a member of the federal executive board. She is a member of the Lower Saxony state board, member of the Liberal Seniors and was on the council of the European ALDE party until 2016 and vice-president of the European Liberal Women until 2014 . Gesine Meißner was Federal Chairwoman of the Liberal Women of the FDP from 2014 to 2016, and has been Deputy Chairwoman since 2016.

Member of the state parliament

From 2003 to 2009 Meißner was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament, initially for the constituency of Lehrte ( Burgdorf , Lehrte , Uetze ), after the state election in 2008 for the constituency of Springe ( Wennigsen , Hemmingen , Ronnenberg and Springe ). As a member of the state parliament, she acted as chair of the state parliament's committee for social affairs, women, family, health and housing. After being elected to the European Parliament in 2009, she gave up her state parliament mandate.

MEPs

In the 2009 European elections she ran as the top candidate on the Lower Saxony state list of the FDP. elected. Meißner was a MEP from 2009 to 2019. She was a member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism and an alternate member of the Committees on Development and Fisheries . She was also involved in the Mexico delegation and in the EUROLAT parliamentary association for relations with Latin America. In addition, Ms. Meißner was a deputy member of the committee of inquiry into emission measurements in the automotive industry. From October 2018 she was chairman of the three-person FDP delegation.

Meißner is a member of the Europa-Union parliamentary group European Parliament, Amnesty International and the German Rural Women's Association .

Volunteering

Meißner is involved in the board of trustees of the Albert-Schweitzer-Familienwerk , on the board of the DRK Children and Youth Foundation, in the church district council, in the social chamber of the EKD and as vice-president of the European Railway Forum.

Private

Meißner lives in Wennigsen (Deister) , is married and has two children. Her brother Lutz Winkelmann was a member of the CDU state parliament.
