The Wennigs water wheels are miniature water mills in Wennigsen am Feldberg im Deister . Around 2 km from the edge of the Deister and 3.5 km from the Annaturm , over 20 water mill models are built every year in the summer half-year over a length of around 100 meters, depicting motifs from the world of fantasy, fairy tales and legends and powered by the water power of a gradually dammed watercourse . The water wheels in the Norddeister landscape protection area are known nationwide through print and radio media and are advertised as a tourist attraction and “most famous tourist destination in Deister” by the “local recreation” department of the Hanover region .

history

Mining on the Feldberg

Georg Egestorff , who already operated hard coal mines on the Bröhn and Hülsebrink in the Deister , had two tunnels and three shafts sunk on the intermediate slope of the Feldberg from 1836 . Extraction from the 33 cm thick seam was not very profitable. After the flooding of the lower areas in 1901, the wells were filled and demolished the buildings above ground.

First water wheels

The well crank was one of the early models

The water that emerged from a former weather tunnel on the slope flowed to the Bruchbach between the Feldberg and the Bröhn.

On the mountain slope, which is quite steep for the area, children built their first small dams and water toys. Inspired by these beginnings, the idea was picked up by five men in 1957 and developed further on their own. The clay required to build a small reservoir and to design the banks of the stream was brought from the Rattenbach, the section of the Mühlbach between the later Wennigsen water park and the Upper Mill .

A large number of small models were set up by the stream. The beautification association participated by collecting donations for the maintenance.

Before the 1961 season, the models were vandalized in a single night . Beautification association and hobbyists gave up the water wheels.

Restart

Until 2013 there was the 50-year-old collecting box at the entrance

In the autumn of 1962, a community college course was set up, which was dedicated to the preservation of the water wheels and was offered until 1977.

The old hobbyists also took part again. The water wheels now consisted of fewer, but mostly larger models. Some of them have been rebuilt over and over again for decades, with multiple repairs.

Among other things, the adult education center used a permanently installed donation box to collect donations for the handicrafts. The responsible forester supported the water wheels by expanding and maintaining the paths and railings around the site. When the initiator moved away, the support from the Adult Education Center ended in 1977.

society

The newly founded association "Hobbyist Community of Wennigser Wasserräder eV" took over the maintenance of the waterwheels in 1977. The registered association was recognized as a non-profit organization in 1997 .

The municipality of Wennigsen gave the association changing rooms for winter storage and repair of the models over the years.

In 2007, after a long period of time, there was once again vandalism on the water wheels.

In 2005, a model was sponsored for the first time when the Evestorf local fire brigade took over the repair of the post mill. In 2008 a cooperation was entered into with the workshop school in Hanover .

description

Infrastructure

A refuge, seating and a large rocking horse, which needs to be repaired again and again, were set up near the water wheels. The stream is fenced with a simple wooden railing.

In 2004 the railing was renewed with a total length of 140 meters. A winter storm in January 2006 caused the refuge and the safety railing to be badly damaged as a result of the falling trees. A year later, the railing was damaged by Hurricane Kyrill .

The refuge was damaged again by a tree that fell during hurricane Friederike in January 2018 and was then demolished.

Models

The Ferris wheel, usually the model at the very front

The older models, which have existed since the early 1960s, included a fire brigade model by Hermann Hagedorn, the gondola, the Deister radar tower, the chairlift, the Snow White model and “Wilkenings Ruh” by Wilhelm Lauenstein and the knight's castle by Otto Schindler and Hugo Tatar. The chain carousel and the Deisterschmiede even go back to the late 1950s.

Other of the models on display date from the mid-1970s, for example the “Meadow with Animals” model from 1974. Selected models are temporarily used as objects for demonstration. a. exhibited in Hanover , for example at the Hanover Region Discovery Day there, or for the 800th anniversary of the Wennigsen community and the Wennigsen business and trade show. Over the decades, new models have been created again and again, while others were no longer installed.

The models are sometimes created over several years of development and construction time of up to 400 hours. There is a cooperation with the technical aid organization Springe , the fire brigade Evestorf and the workshop school in Hanover for construction and dismantling . Some models were equipped with chimes. In the Deisterschmiede and hammer mill, eccentrics operate small hammers.

In the early years, the models were mainly made of wood and sheet metal, which were painted many times over. Around the turn of the millennium, plastic figures and mechanics came increasingly into use. The hobbyists have had a 3D printer since the beginning of 2018 . This allows new figures to be made faster and easier.

Chain carousel and butterfly

Chain carousel

The chain carousel has existed since the late 1950s. It was shown again in 1999 for the first time after a long break. In addition to the carousel, his water wheel also drives the wings of a butterfly and a swing.

Deisterschmiede

The Deisterschmiede has been around since the late 1950s.

Hammer mill

The hammer mill was repaired in winter 1999/2000 and revised in winter 2003/04.

Dwarf mill

The dwarf mill already shown in the 1960s is one of the early models of water wheels.

Sawmill

Sawmill

The sawmill model was restored in 2003. In winter 2009/10 the house of the model was renewed.

Snow White model

The figure of the evil stepmother with an apple was added to the Snow White model in winter 2002/03.

Chimney sweep model

The chimney sweep model was expanded to include a rocker in winter 2007/08.

Widow Bolte with Max and Moritz

The model showing widow Bolte with Max and Moritz was already on view in the 1960s. In September 1999 this model was exhibited at Opernplatz in Hanover . In 2007 the model was damaged by vandalism.

Gondola

Gondola

The gondola is from the early 1960s. It was the second model after the post mill that a sponsorship could be found. In the winter of 2007/08, the model was serviced by students from the Hanover workshop school. On June 13, 2008, an unlimited cooperation agreement was signed with the workshop school, which continues to take care of the gondola lift. In the 2011 season, the model returned to the stream after a four-year absence. For the 2014 season it was given a new base.

Fire department model

The fire department model fell from the late 1960s through at intervals of several hoses to the viewer splashing water. In the mid-1970s, these water-consuming details disappeared. The model, based on the Wennigsen spray house , is traditionally placed at the top at the source of the stream. In the winter of 2007/08 the model received a new hose tower. It was repainted for the 2003 season. In winter 2004/05 the model received a new tool shed.

Wennigser Hotel

Wennigser Hotel

The Wennigser Hotel is the largest of all the models in the complex. It shows scenes from Wennigsen's life, including the Wennigsen water park , costumed members of the historical free shooting and a sign referring to the 800th anniversary of the Wennigsen community. In addition, a glockenspiel was installed that plays the melody Es rattle the mill on the rushing brook , but previously intoned a different melody. The model is also called the Kneipp hotel after Wennigsen once made efforts to be recognized as a Kneipp spa . It consists of around 100 individual parts, half of which are moving parts of the drive. Since the spring of 2000, this model has been part of the Wennigs water wheels again after a ten-year absence. It was reconstructed beforehand on the basis of photos, whereby not only the carrier plate but also almost all the figures had to be replaced.

Forest circus

The forest circus received a ticket booth in the winter of 2008/09.

The water-powered post mill

Post mill

The post mill could already be seen at the end of the 1990s. With a size of 1.90 meters from the base to the wing tip, it is the tallest model. The wings of the model are almost two meters long. The post mill was damaged by vandalism in 2007. In winter 2007/08, as in the following winter, it was given a new coat of paint.

Chairlift

The cable car with mountain and valley station is probably the longest model. It repeatedly required modifications. For the 2010 season, too, the lift received a new valley station as well as new roles and figures.

Dollhouse

The doll's house , which has not been shown for a long time, dates from the 1970s. The model, made of wood and metal, comprises four rooms, in which there are various movable installations, and was shown in the summer of 2007 at the exhibition in the Wennigsen museum on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Wennigs waterwheels.

Lummerland

Lummerland (formerly: tram model)

The tram model dates from the late 1970s and showed a vehicle on Deister line 10 of the Hannoversche Verkehrsbetriebe üstra . With a weight of almost 150 kilograms, it was the heaviest of the Wennigs water wheels. In the winter of 2008/09, the model was rebuilt so that there are now several figures from the Augsburger Puppenkiste after the work as a Lummerland model with Lukas the locomotive driver, the locomotive Emma, Jim Knopf and Alfons the quarter to twelfth and the houses of Mr. Jim Knopf and Lukas the engine driver by Michael Ende shows.

Sesame Street

The Sesame Street model , named after the television series of the same name , which shows Ernie, Bert, Oskar and the Cookie Monster, was presented to the public for the first time in 2000 after a two to three year development period. It was presented at the Greater Hanover Discovery Day. The production of the model took 400 hours of work, spread over several years. The figures of the model are handmade from solid wood. In the winter of 2004/05 the model received an additional sequence of movements. The 2007 model was damaged by vandalism.

Shooting festival with bumper cars

Shooting festival

The model with motifs from the Wennigser Schützenfest replaced the hotel model that was missing for a long time. Later, both models were often shown at the same time. As an innovation, a bumper car was modeled in action.

Deistertürme (formerly: double-decker)

The model of a double decker was first installed on the stream in spring 2004. Wenni, the mascot of the Wennigser Wirtschafts- und Gewerbeschau, was the pilot in this historic double-decker. The model was presented at this very show before it was installed on the stream. The construction time for the model was five months. The biplane was replaced by a lighter aircraft in later seasons. Since 2017 at the latest, the model has only reproduced the air traffic control tower built on the Deisterkamm near Wennigsen and a scene at the Annaturm.

Meadow with animals

The model farm or meadow with animals dates from 1974. The compact model was only built with breaks of several years. The model and all of its figures now come from the 3D printer.

Regular events

The waterwheels have been set up along the stream every spring since 1957 and officially opened on the last Saturday in April with a festive event, on the last Friday in September they are dismantled and restored during the winter. Every year the water wheels turn up to seven million times in 3600 hours and are visited by around 20,000 to 25,000 guests, i.e. around 130 to 160 guests daily. In 2008 40,000 visitors were counted. This makes the water wheels the most popular destination in Wennigsen. Around 1000 visitors can be counted at the annual opening in spring alone. Traditionally, the opening ceremony is accompanied by the music parade of the Wennigs fire brigade and representatives of local politics. At the opening of the anniversary season on April 28, 2007, Mayor Christoph Meineke and Deputy Regional President Doris Klawunde were present alongside around 1000 guests.

On August 25, 2007, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary celebration, a festival of lights took place, which showed the Wennigs water wheels illuminated by 800 tea lights after dark. The event was repeated annually in August.

As part of the traditional Deister hike, guided tours along the models are offered.

media

Video of some models (2009)

In 2004 Günter Rösinger made a short film on the subject of "movement" for a video company in Hanover-Ricklingen , which shows the Wennigs water wheels. In 2005, Frank Wenzel published a 170-page chronicle about the Wennigser Wasserwheels, for which Helmut Kathöwer did the preparatory work from 1998 until his death in 2003.

From August 19, 2007 to September 28, 2007 an exhibition was held in the Wennigser Heimatmuseum about the past 50 years of the Wennigser water wheels.

In July 2018, RTL Nord reported on the waterwheel hobbyist in the Mein Verein series .

Trivia

Spring pond at the Feldberg spring

As an April Fool's joke , a regional newspaper announced in 1970 that a replica of the RMS Titanic was about to be launched on the spring pond at the Feldberg spring on the 60th anniversary of the sinking on April 12, 1972 . After its completion, the ship was to undertake tourist cruises on the approximately 0.0005 hectare navigable body of water, but only in the summer months in order to prevent the risk of colliding with icebergs.
