A Serbian Orthodox monastic community in Geilnau is called the Skite of St. Spyridon .

location

The ski of Saint Spiridon is in Geilnau near Balduinstein , which in turn belongs to the Diez community in Rhineland-Palatinate .

history

In 1989 the building of a former inn was acquired by a small community of Orthodox monks and converted into a ski . The former assembly room became a chapel . In the mid-1990s, the Serbian Orthodox Bishop for Central Europe , Constantine , elevated the community to a skite. The Skite is dependent on its mother monastery, the Serbian Orthodox monastery of the All Saints Theotokos in Hildesheim - Himmelsthür , but administratively completely independent.

Due to the limited space in Geilnau a new branch in the was osthessischen market town Eiterfeld belonging place Unterufhausen founded. On the site on which the Annunciation St. Justin Hermitage , a Serbian- style church was built.

Monastic community and leadership

The small community is headed by Abbot S'chi Archimandrite Vasilije (Basil). The Swiss-born abbot Basilius Grolimund lived on Mount Athos for eleven years before he founded the Skite in Geilnau.

The monks of the Skite of St. Spyridon are involved in the respective new editions of Sergius Heitz's book of faith, which is an orthodox catechism .

The monks are open to visits, they just ask for prior registration. They also offer adult men, including non-Orthodox Christians, the opportunity to live in a monastery for a while and to get to know monastic life (“temporary monastery”). The service language is mainly German, but Serbian, Church Slavonic, Greek, English and French are also used.

liturgy

Measured by Western-Latin standards, the monastery, like all Orthodox monasteries, is contemplative . So the focus is on prayer and liturgy . The daily prayers and the liturgy determine the rhythm of life in the monastery.
