Margarita Mathiopoulos (born May 17, 1956 in Bonn ) is a German entrepreneur and publicist .

Life

education

Margarita Mathiopoulos is the daughter of the Greek-born journalist Basil Petros Mathiopoulos and the Greek-born philologist Elsie Mathiopoulou-Tornaritou . During the takeover of power by the Greek colonel junta in April 1967, Mathiopoulos' father was filming for WDR in Athens . Because of the military coup, he fled to the German embassy with his colleague Thilo Koch . Through the personal commitment of the then Federal German Foreign Minister Willy Brandt , he was flown back to Bonn to his family, as the junta stripped him of his Greek citizenship. In an anthology in 1995, Mathiopoulos describes her memories of her youth under the title A Political Childhood .

After graduating from the Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium , Mathiopoulos studied political science , contemporary history , law , Italian philology and psychology (minor) in Bonn and at the Sorbonne (from November to December 1979 ). In 1980 she completed her studies with a Magister Artium (MA) at the University of Bonn . She then conducted research as a visiting student from 1980 to 1983 with a doctoral scholarship from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation at the Government Department of Harvard University . Her mentors were Samuel P. Huntington and Richard E. Neustadt.

In 1986, she was at Karl Dietrich Bracher with the subject "history and progress in thinking America: A European-American compared" at the University of Bonn to Dr. phil. PhD; the second reviewer was Wolfgang Bergsdorf . Her dissertation was published in 1987 by Ferdinand Schöningh and was published in 1989 in English translation with a foreword by Gordon A. Craig by Praeger in New York . After repeated allegations of plagiarism, the revocation of the doctorate due to fraud became legally binding in 2017. This decision was upheld by the European Court of Human Rights in December 2018 .

Professional career

From 1975 to 1980 Mathiopoulos was a freelance journalist and presenter at WDR . From 1978 to 1980 she worked as a presenter on regional television for WDR on the programs Here and Today and Our Home - Her Home . From 1977 to 1979 she was also the press attachée of the Cypriot embassy in Bonn. From 1983 to 1985 Mathiopoulos worked as a correspondent for the Greek TV station ERT 1 , from 1985 to 1987 she worked in the management of IBM in Stuttgart in the field of communication and marketing .

In March 1987 Mathiopoulos became known nationwide when the SPD chairman Willy Brandt nominated her for the new post of party spokeswoman , although she was non-party. Brandt saw this as an opportunity to help the SPD gain a progressive image, but the nomination led to severe criticism. In order not to harm Brandt, Mathiopoulos withdrew her application. The dispute in the SPD continued to escalate and Brandt resigned from his position as party chairman on March 23, 1987. On March 23, 1987, the magazine Der Spiegel had the cover Mathiopoulos - Brandt's case . Mathiopoulos and Brandt were shown on the cover.

Mathiopoulos became Vice-Director of the Berlin branch of the Aspen Institute in 1987 and took on teaching positions on US foreign policy and international security at the Free University of Berlin . She had to give up a substitute for the Arnulf Barings chair planned for the winter semester 1989/90 due to the plagiarism allegations made against her .

In late summer 1989 she lectured at Stanford University at the invitation of Gordon A. Craig . In early 1990 she was a Fellow of the German Marshall Fund at the Institute for East West Security Studies in New York. She then taught as a DAAD visiting professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

In 1992 Mathiopoulos was hired at Norddeutsche Landesbank as Head of Marketing and Communication as well as International Relations. In 1997 she sued the Hanover Labor Court against her dismissal and reached a settlement that guaranteed her compensation of DM 410,000 plus company car. During this time Mathiopoulos held lectures at the University of Hanover and at the Technical University of Braunschweig , which she made an honorary professor in 1995 , as the first woman in the 250-year history of the university.

From 1998 to 2001 Mathiopoulos was chief advisor to the CEO of the British defense group BAE Systems , John Weston, for European and North American markets. From 2000 to 2001, she also chaired an international commission of experts on the restructuring of the Greek armed forces between 2000 and 2015 on behalf of the Greek Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos .

In July 2001 Mathiopoulos founded the EAG European Advisory Group together with the former Inspector General of the Bundeswehr and Chairman of the NATO Military Committee Klaus Naumann , the former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt and other partners , of which she has been managing partner since then. The company advised and mediated, among other things, in connection with international armaments deals such as the sale of submarines to Egypt or Croatia . From 2002 to 2018 she was honorary professor for US foreign policy and international security at the University of Potsdam . In the same year she was appointed managing director of the Potsdam Center for Transatlantic Security and Military Affairs . In fact, this center, propagated as a “military-political think tank”, never started its work because of a lack of funding.

In 2002 she joined the FDP , where she had been active on the program commission in the field of foreign and security policy since 2001. Since then she has also acted as a foreign and security policy advisor to the then Federal Chairman Guido Westerwelle . From 2003 to 2005 Mathiopoulos was chairman of the FDP Federal Committee on International Politics and, since 2005, chairman (and the only named member) of the newly founded Transatlantic Forum of the FDP, which was "extensively supported" by the economy . In August 2012 she was replaced by Rainer Stinner .

In September 2006 Mathiopoulos founded addition as managing partner for EAG European Advisory Group , the Aspide GmbH .

Margarita Mathiopoulos was a member of the board of trustees of Netzwerk Quadriga gGmbH .

Private

From 1987 to 2006 Mathiopoulos was married to the CDU politician Friedbert Pflüger . In 2003 she separated from Pflüger after he had started a relationship with his personal advisor.

Allegations of plagiarism

In a review of her dissertation, political scientist Andreas Falke raised allegations of plagiarism as early as 1989.

On September 11, 1989, the news magazine Der Spiegel reported that Mathiopoulos' dissertation contained “blemishes” because “in several places” passages had been copied “almost verbatim” from the work of others without these passages being shown as quotations , and cited examples; Furthermore, it is reported in the article that Mathiopoulos had communicated through her lawyer that she “made 'obviously' regrettable 'careless mistakes' in those places where the sources were not disclosed. According to Spiegel, the doctoral supervisor was "'very concerned that the working methods used in some places do not correspond to scientific practices'", but sees "the core of Ms. Mathiopoulos 'intellectual performance not being impaired'" The doctoral degree was initially not withdrawn , although the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Bonn, which had awarded the doctoral degree, wrote in an expert report, according to the Spiegel, “that in the work 'literally and logically, more was taken over' than it was Evidence of quotations'. "

When the Berliner Zeitung in July 2002 in an article on the occasion of Mathiopoulos' entry into the FDP, citing the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, about the accusations that have long been known and have already been made public by other print media, that Mathiopoulos had not cited the sources of some citations in her dissertation , reported that, according to Spiegel, Mathiopoulos took legal action against it, but withdrew her application at the hearing "on the advice of the judge".

From April 2011 , the dissertation was examined for plagiarism by the VroniPlag Wiki , which has set itself the goal of collaborative documentation of plagiarism in dissertations. According to VroniPlag Wiki, plagiarism found sites were known on a total of 18 pages in 1991, which corresponds to 5 percent of the pages (without foreword, table of contents, bibliography, appendix, etc.). According to VroniPlag Wiki (as of July 19, 2011), however, plagiarism can be found on more than 46 percent of the pages.

The doctoral committee of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Bonn decided in July 2011 to re-examine the dissertation, because according to the Dean Günther Schulz , the research by VroniPlag Wiki had revealed new facts. On April 18, 2012, it was decided to revoke her doctorate. On December 6, 2012, the Cologne Administrative Court upheld the decision of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Bonn, which had rightly assumed that Mathiopoulos had "taken large passages of her dissertation literally from other works". In March 2015, the OVG Münster approved the revision with reference to “particular difficulties in the case”. In particular, the question should be clarified how a university decision from 1991 on allegations of plagiarism already raised at that time should be assessed. Mathiopoulos has appealed to the Federal Administrative Court. On June 21, 2017, the court rejected the appeal.

The Technical University of Braunschweig and the University of Potsdam announced that they would withdraw the honorary professorships awarded to them as soon as the withdrawal of the doctoral degree is legally binding. The European Court of Human Rights ruled on October 4, 2018 (complaint number 38128/18) that Mathiopoulos' complaint against the decision of the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig was inadmissible; Mathiopoulos has thus definitely lost her doctorate.

Falke published its plagiarism allegations, which are still relatively modest from today's perspective, based on four titles in an extremely critical review overall. "
