“The Quadriga” was an annual event in Berlin from 2003 to 2010 by the now insolvent “Netzwerk Quadriga gGmbH” on the initiative of the “ Werkstatt Deutschland e. V.award . The award was given to personalities or groups from politics, business and culture who, through their commitment, should have set an example for new beginnings, renewal and pioneering spirit. Until 2007, the prize was endowed with 100,000 euros, which were divided into four sub-prizes. After the withdrawal of the sponsor Vattenfall in 2008 it was undoped.

In 2011, the intention to award the prize to Vladimir Putin sparked massive protests. As a result, the award was initially suspended; then the award was never given again. The association was deleted from the register on March 14, 2017 . Insolvency proceedings were opened against Netzwerk Quadriga gGmbH and the company was dissolved on April 18, 2018.

The board of Werkstatt Deutschland e. V. and the Netzwerk Quadriga gGmbH included the politician Lothar de Maizière , the spokesman for the Association of Towns and Municipalities, Franz-Reinhard Habbel , and the publicist Marie-Luise Weinberger; the first chairman was the politician Klaus Riebschläger, who died in 2009 .

Award

The prize consisted of a miniature replica of the Quadriga on the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. The award ceremony took place annually on the Day of German Unity in Berlin: in the first two years in the Konzerthaus Berlin (Schauspielhaus) and from 2005 to 2008 in the Komische Oper . In 2009 the Quadriga was awarded in the Weltsaal of the Federal Foreign Office and again in 2010 in the Konzerthaus Berlin on Gendarmenmarkt.

Suspension of awards in 2011

For 2011 it was planned to award a prize to Vladimir Putin , which led to criticism from the public. The decision was criticized, among others, by the former SED opponent and civil rights activist Roland Jahn as well as Markus Löning , the human rights commissioner of the federal government. The Green politician Cem Özdemir resigned on the grounds that he held Putin out of the award committee as the “wrong winner”. The historian Edgar Wolfrum and the founder of the Berlin Bela Foundation, Barbara-Maria Monheim, also resigned in protest. Václav Havel threatened to return the award and Ólafur Elíasson returned his 2010 award on July 15, 2011 in protest. Ruprecht Polenz (CDU), the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Bundestag, criticized Putin only developed Russia economically, but not advanced the rule of law and the realization of human rights in Russia . The human rights policy spokeswoman for the Union parliamentary group Erika Steinbach said that "the value of the prize can only be saved if the decision is revised".

As a consequence of the criticism, the Board of Trustees decided in mid-July 2011 to completely cancel the award for 2011. Besides Putin, the nominees were actually:
