Dietlinde "Lilli" Gruber (born April 19, 1957 in Bozen ) is an Italian journalist , presenter , politician and writer from a South Tyrolean family .

Life

Lilli Gruber grew up bilingual with German and Italian. After completing a degree in literature at the University of Venice , Lilli Gruber first wrote for the regional daily newspapers l'Adige and Alto Adige . Her career as a television journalist began at Rai Sender Bozen , the German-language broadcaster of the Italian public broadcasting company Rai .

From 1991 Gruber was the presenter of the main news program tg1 of the Italian state television RAIUno , but also worked as a journalist in foreign crisis areas. She also produced several programs for German private television, for example in 1996 she was the presenter of Focus TV .

After Gruber criticized the Berlusconi government for restricting the freedom of the press more and more, it left television to run for the 2004 European elections. In the elections to the European Parliament , she won the duel between her party, the left-wing alliance L'Ulivo , against Berlusconi's Forza Italia in the Italian capital, Rome . All in all, “Lilli, the Red”, as she is also known, received more preferential votes than any other candidate in that election. In her home country South Tyrol she was also able to attract numerous voices.

In September 2008, Lilli Gruber announced that she would no longer stand for the upcoming elections to the European Parliament in 2009 and would dedicate himself again to journalism. In mid-September 2008 she took over the moderation of the talk show Otto e mezzo on the Italian private broadcaster La7 . In 2012 she was supposed to be appointed director of the Italian edition of the “ Huffington Post ”, but in May 2012 the final decision was made in favor of Lucia Annunziata .

In 1995 she was awarded the Carlo Schmid Foundation Prize. In November 2003 she was awarded the lowest level of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic by President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi on his initiative .
