Michael Rogowski (born March 13, 1939 in Stuttgart ) is an industrial engineer and former German manager . In addition, he was President of the Federation of German Industries (BDI) from 2001 to 2004 .

Life

Rogowski was born the son of an engineer. After attending a Waldorf school , graduating from high school in Stuttgart in 1959, he first studied economics at the University of Lausanne from 1959 to 1960 . He then moved to the TH Karlsruhe , where he passed his diploma in industrial engineering in 1965 . At the same university he began to work as an assistant for ergonomics and manufacturing management, and in 1968 was appointed deputy head of the Institute for Technical Management (ITB) at the University of Karlsruhe . In 1969 he was awarded a Dr. rer. pole. PhD .

In the same year Rogowski joined the sewing machine factory Singer-Werke GmbH in Karlsruhe. Here he was initially assistant to the chairman of the management until 1970, then headed the staff unit for planning and rationalization at a subsidiary of the US group Singer , then the organization / data processing and later also human resources and social affairs. In 1973, Rogowski was appointed managing director of SISCO GmbH in Frankfurt, a subsidiary of Singer.

At the beginning of 1974 Rogowski moved to the then Heidenheim family company JMVoith GmbH (today: Voith GmbH - see below) and began his career there as the head of human resources and social affairs. In 1976 he was first deputy and then in 1978 full managing director of Voith, responsible for human resources and social affairs as well as materials management. From 1982 to 1992 he also took over the management of the drive technology division, during which time (1986) he advanced to the position of spokesman for the management of JM Voith GmbH.

In 1992 he was appointed Chairman of the Group Management. With the conversion of JM Voith GmbH into JM Voith Aktiengesellschaft in 1997, Michael Rogowski took over the chairmanship of the group board. His successor as Voith CEO was the previous CFO Hermut Kormann . From April 2000 to March 2010 he was Chairman of the Voith AG Supervisory Board and the company's shareholders' committee. On March 5, 2010, Manfred Bischoff succeeded him in this position.

Rogowski was involved in association politics - in particular in the Metal Employers' Association of Baden-Württemberg and the Association of German Mechanical and Plant Engineering (VDMA), in which mainly medium-sized family businesses are organized. Rogowski has had a seat on the board of the VDMA since 1992 and was elected Vice President and Treasurer in 1993. In January 1996 he succeeded Jan Kleinwefers and took over the VDMA presidency until 1998. Rogowski sought a merger or closer cooperation between the VDMA and the Central Association of the Electrical and Electronics Industry ( ZVEI ), but could not implement it. In 1999 he was replaced by Eberhard Reuther in this post - as scheduled .

At the BDI, Rogowski was Vice President from 1997 to 1998, then a member of the Presidium. From January 1, 2001 until the end of 2004, Rogowski was then - as successor to Hans-Olaf Henkel - President of the Federation of German Industries. On January 1, 2005 he was replaced by Jürgen Thumann in this function.

Rogowski repeatedly spoke out in favor of a fundamental reform of the tax system, the social system, subsidy practices and tariff structures, because what he believed to be an over-regulated economy and excessive paternalism by the state would stifle initiative and innovation. He also advocated the abolition of parity participation .

Rogowski received 20,000 euros for 2006/2007 for his activities on the supervisory board of IKB , which is threatened with bankruptcy . Critics accuse the Supervisory Board of inaction in connection with the crisis.

From July 2005 to June 2006 he hosted the program Rogowski Chefsache! on n-tv.

Rogowski is married and has two children. His grandson is the actor Franz Rogowski .
