Ulrich Grillo (born September 2, 1959 in Cologne ) is a German entrepreneur and former President of the Federation of German Industries (BDI) .

Career

After graduating from high school, Grillo did his military service from 1978 to 1979 . From 1980 to 1982 he completed vocational training as a banker at Deutsche Bank . From 1982 he studied business administration at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . In 1987 he became a business graduate . After working as audit manager for the auditing and tax consultancy firm Arthur Andersen in Frankfurt, he worked for the multinational management consultancy group AT Kearney in Düsseldorf.

From 1993 to 2001 Grillo was with the armaments company Rheinmetall AG, initially as head of the Controlling department of the Rheinmetall Group's management holding company. In 1996 he took over the central planning and controlling department as director with full power of attorney, and in 1998 he received general power of attorney. From July 1999 to July 2001, Grillo was a member of the executive board responsible for the finance / controlling department of Rheinmetall DeTec AG, Ratingen. From November 1999 to April 2001 he was chairman and managing director of STN Atlas Elektronik GmbH, Bremen, a subsidiary of Rheinmetall DeTec AG. In December 1999, Grillo was appointed deputy chairman of the board of Rheinmetall DeTec.

In 2001 he became a member of the board of the family-owned company of the Grillo Group in Duisburg. The Grillo Group, which generates 637.85 million euros in sales, is owned by the children of Herbert Grillo , Gabriela and Rainer Grillo. Grillo-Werke AG, on the other hand, which is a subsidiary of the group and generated around EUR 310 million in sales in 2015, has around 150 shareholders. Ulrich Grillo's family branch holds less than 2% of the Group's subsidiary, Grillo-Werke AG. When he joined the group, he himself bought 10% of Grillo-Werke AG for which he was in debt. The purchase price was almost 6 million euros and was made with 1 million euros in equity. Ulrich Grillo still manages the group and the Grillo-Werke, although Grillo-Werke AG has been in the red for years. Due to a deferred tax burden since 1999 (which amounts to more than half of the equity of Grillo-Werke AG), the municipalities agreed to keep these debts for many years in order not to take away the company's livelihood. The Grillo-Werke are 87% financed with outside capital, with company assets amounting to 44 million euros. In 2017 Ulrich Grillo's block of shares was still in debt to the Westfalenbank for EUR 2.88 million.

From 2005, Ulrich Grillo dealt with commodity issues for commodity Alliance (ARS), the security of supply of German industry for critical raw materials such as rare earths , should improve, he could twelve DAX win undertakings incinerating or by BASF on ThyssenKrupp to VW and BMW . In November 2012 he was elected to succeed Hans-Peter Keitel as President of the Federation of German Industries , whose position he took over on January 1, 2013. Since January 2013 he has also been President of the Germany - Land of Ideas initiative .

Grillo participated in the 2013 Bilderberg Conference in Hertfordshire .

Grillo is a member of the board of steel and metal trade Klöckner & Co .

Awards

In 2008 Grillo received the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia . In 2017 he was awarded the Walter Scheel Prize .

Private life

Grillo is married with two daughters and plays golf.
