The Germany - Land of Ideas initiative is the joint location initiative of the federal government and German industry, represented by the Federation of German Industries (BDI).

layout

According to its own description, one goal of the initiative is to use “positive” national symbols. The Futura by Paul Renner is used for the lettering . This font stands for the Bauhaus movement. The national colors are represented by three dahlias . The dahlias were brought to Germany by Alexander von Humboldt . These symbols are intended to represent Germany's willingness to innovate and research.

founding

The location initiative was launched in 2005 with a view to the 2006 World Cup . The World Cup drew the attention of the whole world to Germany. Government and business agreed on a joint commitment to image cultivation of Germany and founded the initiative Germany - Land of Ideas under the leadership of the former Federal Minister of the Interior Otto Schily and the German economy, represented by the former BDI President Michael Rogowski . The name and motto come from a quote from Federal President Horst Köhler , who said when he took office in 2004: "The guiding principle of the Federal Republic of Germany should be: [...] a land of ideas!"

aims

From the initial campaign for the football World Cup, a long-term location initiative developed with the aim of conveying a positive image of Germany at home and abroad and emphasizing the strengths of Germany as a business and science location . The core message covers a wide range of topics that the initiative integrates into its activities: It wants to make technological innovations visible, set creative, cultural and social impulses and support the spirit of scientific research.

Current projects

In order to achieve its goals, the initiative realizes a large number of national and international projects (e.g. ideas competitions, publications, exhibitions, delegation trips and virtual platforms).

One of the initiative's projects is the nationwide competition Excellent Places in the Land of Ideas . The competition is intended to make social innovations from all areas known and to show the performance and future viability of the locations. The competition emerged from the series of events 365 Places in the Land of Ideas , which has honored over 3000 projects nationwide since 2006. The national sponsor of the competition is Deutsche Bank .

With the German Mobility Award, the “Germany - Land of Ideas” initiative and the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure have been making digital innovations for intelligent mobility publicly visible since 2016. The aim is to show the opportunities of digitization for the mobility of tomorrow. Every year, 10 projects are awarded by an expert jury and then presented to the public. In addition, all citizens can take part in an online ideas competition on issues relating to mobility and submit their ideas on various topics.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the State Bauhaus in 2019, the initiative, supported by the Federal Foreign Office , the Lotto Foundation Berlin and SAP, identified 20 international projects and concepts with the design competition "beyond bauhaus - prototyping the future" and presented them to the public in a two-week exhibition presented in Berlin.

Completed Projects

Under the patronage of the Federal Minister of Education and Research Johanna Wanka , the competition, Ideas for the Republic of Education from 2011 to 2014, honored educational institutions, projects and initiatives that are committed to increasing educational equality for children and young people. At the end of the respective application period, a jury of education experts, chaired by Wassilios Fthenakis, selected the 52 best “education ideas”, which were then honored individually week after week in an award ceremony. The competition was sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The cooperation partner was the Vodafone Foundation Germany .

The three-year series of events Germany and China - Moving Together presented Germany between 2007 and 2010 as the land of ideas in its cultural, economic, scientific and social diversity in China's cities and provinces. The general theme of the events was sustainable urbanization . The main topics were thus based on the motto of Expo 2010 Better City - Better Life and dealt with urbanization and sustainable urban development. The highlight of the series of events was an EXPO appearance with the German-Chinese House in Shanghai. The program, which started in 2007 and ended in autumn 2010, was organized by the Federal Foreign Office together with the Goethe-Institut, the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business and the Initiative Germany - Land of Ideas . It was under the joint patronage of Federal President Horst Köhler and Chinese President Hu Jintao .

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of India , the Germany Year Germany and India 2011–2012 took place. Under the motto “Germany and India. Infinite Opportunities ”, Germany presented itself as the“ Land of Ideas ”and India's innovative and creative partner for solving future issues.
