Riccardo Illy
Riccardo Illy (born September 24, 1955 in Trieste ) is an Italian entrepreneur and former president of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region .
Life
As a teenager, Illy was a ski instructor in Piancavallo and a sailing instructor in Monfalcone . At a very young age he married Rossana Bettini, a journalist for wine and gastronomy. They both have a daughter, Daria, who is now a physical education teacher and personal trainer.
He has been working for illycaffè SpA , founded in 1933 by his grandfather of Hungarian origin, since 1977 . There he was first as commercial director, then as managing director and finally until today as vice president. He reorganized the commercial structure and that of the controlled companies. For illycaffè he created the marketing area that didn’t exist before and wrote “Coffee. From the bean to the espresso ”, published by Mondadori and translated into English, French and German.
He was Vice-President of the Trieste Industrialists' Union and President of the Veronelli Permanent Seminary.
Illy was elected mayor of Trieste twice - in 1993 and 1997 - and a third term is not allowed in Italy. As mayor, he has also taken over the office of President of the City Opera Giuseppe Verdi .
Riccardo Illy was chairman of the funding committee for the European rail link through the Po Valley . The President of the Italian Republic awarded him the dignity of Comtur and the Austrian Federal President the gold medal of honor. Riccardo Illy was awarded an honorary doctorate in political science by the University of Trieste for his “lectio doctoralis” on the subject of the eastward expansion of the European Union .
In 2001 Illy was elected as a member of the Italian Parliament, where he was an independent member of the mixed group. He was a member of the IX. Parliamentary Committee (Transport, Post and Telecommunications) and Secretary of the Parliamentary Advisory Committee for the Implementation of Administrative Reform.
Riccardo Illy was strongly committed to the referendum for the direct election of regional presidents. After this was decided, he was in the regional elections from 8.-9. Elected President of Friuli Venezia Giulia in June 2003 with the support of the Intesa Democratica coalition . Five years later he was again run as the top candidate of the center-left coalition, but had to admit defeat to his predecessor and candidate from the PDL , Lega Nord and UDC , Renzo Tondo , in the elections on April 13 and 14, 2008 .
In 2007 he published a book entitled "La rana cinese" about what he saw as the failings in Italian politics. The foreword was written by Luca Cordero di Montezemolo .
