The Woblitzsee or Woblitz (from Voblica = Slavic for "Big Water" or "Big Pond") is a lake northeast of the town of Wesenberg in the Mecklenburg Lake District in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

description

The Woblitzsee is traversed by the Havel, which flows in the northwest, coming from the Großer Labussee , and leaves the lake in the south after just under 4 kilometers at Wesenberg to the southeast. The Kammerkanal, which flows into the northeast of the lake, connects the Woblitzsee with the Zierker See near Neustrelitz . Another, but insignificant tributary is the Floßgraben , which drains the small lake area at the Kalkhorst nature reserve ( Tiefer Trebbower See and Flacher Trebbower See ) towards the west and flows south of the Vosswinkel settlement into the eastern part of the Woblitzsee.

The Woblitzsee is part of the 97 kilometers long federal waterway Obere Havel-Wasserstraße (OHW) of waterway class I, which begins at the northern end of the Zierker See; The Eberswalde Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible .

Appearance

The lake consists of two large lake basins, each around 2.4 kilometers long, the northeast basin and the somewhat smaller southwest basin. Both parts of the Woblitzsee are connected by the "neck" (also known locally as "Hälsing" in Low German). At the narrowest point the lake is only 300 meters wide, at the widest about 1.6 kilometers wide.

economy

In the 19th century - and until the middle of the 20th century - brisk shipping traffic could be observed on this lake. Wood, partly in rafts, coal and grain were transported across this lake on barges. Two sawmills were built for wood processing in Wesenberg near the banks of the Woblitzsee. From 1959 the expansion into a large enterprise, Holzindustrie Wesenberg, which was put into operation in 1962 and existed until 1990/1991, began.

tourism

From 1980 onwards, the Woblitzsee gained increasing importance for tourism. Campingpark Havelberge is located on the northern bank, directly at the tributary of the Havel . Water skiing is also possible along a stretch on the northern shore of the lake. Compared to the length of the shore, the Woblitzsee offers only a few swimming spots outside the camping park.
