Chamber Canal near Neustrelitz

The Kammerkanal is a canal in the Mecklenburg Lake District ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ) and a tributary of the Havel . It connects the Zierker See near Neustrelitz with the Woblitzsee of the Havel near Wesenberg . Hydrographically, the two kilometers long northwest tributary of the Zierker See is also attributed to it.

As early as 1790, the Gorbach between the Zierker See and the Woblitzsee was expanded into the “Torfflößer Canal” along its route. The further expansion to the Kammerkanal took place between 1840 and 1843 in order to connect Neustrelitz to the Obere Havel waterway . The water level of the Zierker See has been lowered by 1.60 meters as a result of the construction work since 1790. The remaining level difference is leveled out in the Vosswinkel lock in the Kammer Canal, 1.2 kilometers above the Woblitzsee. Drainage ditches for the surrounding lowlands flow below the lock, some of which are drained as a polder by a pumping station .

The Kammerkanal (KaK) is a section of the 97-kilometer-long federal waterway Obere Havel-Wasserstraße (OHW) of waterway class I with a length of 5.25 kilometers; The Eberswalde Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible .

When the Havel between Woblitzsee and Priepertsee was expanded with a longer lock channel running parallel to the Havel for the Wesenberg lock around 1920, the name Kammerkanal was also used for the entire section between the two lakes. In order to avoid confusion, the Reich Ministry of Transport decided in 1936 that only the section between Zierker See and Woblitzsee should be designated as such, especially since the almost 6 kilometer-long Wesenberg section is not a canal section.
