The Plauer See in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is largely located in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district . The two northern bays near Alt Schwerin belong to the Mecklenburg Lake District .
location
It is traversed by the Elde from east to west and is part of the federal waterway Müritz-Elde waterway with waterway class I; The Lauenburg Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible . The body of water was awarded the title Living Lake of 2011 by the Global Nature Fund .
With an area of 38.4 km², the Plauer See is the third largest lake in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the seventh largest in Germany. It has a north-south extension of around 14 kilometers, a maximum width of 5 kilometers and an average depth of 6.8 meters. It has connections via the Elde to Fleesensee , Kölpinsee and Müritz in the east and to the Elbe in the west. The eponymous town of Plau am See , which is also the center of tourism in this region, is located on the west bank of the Plauer See . There are many tourist facilities around the Plauer See, such as the campsites on the east and north banks, near the town of Plau and on the island of Plauer Werder in the north. The lake is surrounded by a (largely unpaved) circular cycle path.
The Plauer See was called Cuzhin or Kuzin in the 12th century , like the settlement of the same name and castle Kutin or Kutsin - today's Quetzin - on the west bank of the lake. Only later did the lake get the name of the town Plau on the bank.
The north-western part of the lake lies in the nature reserve north shore Plauer See .
