The Ganzlin – Röbel line is a single-track branch line in the south of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It always had only local significance. The passenger traffic already ended in 1966. Freight gave it to the mid-1990s, after which it served until 2005 the museum operation of Röbeler Railway Association Hei Na Ganzlin Robel . This name comes from the colloquial nickname of the railway line. After the line was closed in 2006, Prignitzer Eisenbahn GmbH took over the management of the infrastructure in 2010 and announced that it would be partially reactivated.

The area around Müritz and Plauer See was opened up by several railway lines in the mid-1880s. Previously there was only one branch line from Waren (Müritz) to Malchin in the north. In 1885, the Mecklenburg Southern Railway , which ran in an east-west direction, was opened. A year later the Lloydbahn followed east of the Müritz and the Güstrow – Meyenburg railway west of the Plauer See ; The line to Plau was already in operation in 1883.

However, the city of Röbel still lacked a rail connection. However, the location on the west bank of the Müritz made it practically impossible to build continuous lines across the city, so the state-owned Mecklenburg Friedrich-Franz Railway decided to build a branch line with a connection to the line from Güstrow via Plau to Meyenburg. Since, on the one hand, traffic from Röbel was expected to be oriented primarily towards the northwest, while on the other hand the Plauer See also represented a natural obstacle, the village of Ganzlin remained the starting point. On May 1, 1899, the line was officially opened for passenger traffic, and freight trains had been running since April 5 of that year.

The route's nickname, Hei na Ganzlin (also Heiner Ganzlin ), is said to come from this time . When the line opened, a railway employee answered a question from a resident in Low German where the train should go: “Hey? Nah Ganzlin! ”(He? After Ganzlin).

In 1905, three pairs of passenger trains ran, all of which had connections in Ganzlin to and from the direction of Güstrow . With this sparse offer, the line continued to exist, only in the war years the traffic was thinned to two pairs of trains. In the 1930s a new stop was set up in Fincken , the previous Fincken station was then named after the nearby village of Knüppeldamm.

The passenger traffic was always insignificant in view of the route, as all important places could only be reached by detours. He was already hired on November 1, 1966; Röbel was one of the first district towns in the GDR that had no rail-bound passenger transport. Almost all larger cities could be reached more quickly by bus via Waren. Freight traffic continued, however, and only declined after the reunification in the GDR. As early as 1993, the Deutsche Reichsbahn planned to close the line. Since then, the Hei na Ganzlin railway association, founded in 1992, has tried to take over the line. To carry out the regular special trips, the association founded the Röbel / Müritz Railway (RME), which was recognized as a railway company by the Federal Railway Authority . Freight traffic was stopped on May 30, 1996.

On March 1, 2005, the line was shut down, and another special trip took place the day before. The RME continues to operate as a railway company for special trips and freight traffic, the locomotives are stationed at Berlin-Lichtenberg station.

The line was sold in September 2006 to a company that, with the exception of the first section of the line, wanted to sell the track systems at scrap value. This project was rejected by the Federal Railway Authority in 2008. On April 22, 2010, the PEG infrastructure of Prignitzer Eisenbahn GmbH put the line back into operation in consultation with the owner. Freight wagons are to be parked in the area of ​​the former Bütow loading point , until train journeys could be carried out in train control . The remainder of the stretch to Röbel, which was not passable due to defects in the superstructure , was declared a construction track. The Hei na Ganzlin association continued to plan to resume special trips. In 2012, PE infrastructure and with it the management of the railway line was taken over by the RegioInfra- Gesellschaft. In August 2012, the RegioInfra tendered the section from km 6.730 at the Stuer stop to the end of the route for takeover by third parties or shutdown on behalf of the owner, since economic continued operation was not foreseeable. After no approved railway infrastructure company expressed interest, the section was closed and dismantled in January 2013. In February 2018, the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania applied for the Mecklenburg Lake District to be exempted from railway operations on the Stuer – Röbel section.

The section to Stuer should continue to be operated, with the idea of ​​using it for special tourist trips and connecting the gravel works in Ganzlin. However, on October 1, 2018, the section was also closed.

The line begins at Ganzlin station, where it branches off to the southeast from the Güstrow – Meyenburg railway line. Both routes cross federal highway 103 one after the other . The route to Röbel turns to the east and runs through forest areas to Stuer near the southern tip of the Plauer See. The headwaters of the Elde are reached at Altenhof . Then it runs through open, hilly terrain over Knüppeldamm and Fincken to Dambeck.

The end of the route, Röbel train station, is about one kilometer outside of the city center. It was used by the Hei na Ganzlin railway association with a railway station museum, which was open daily from May to September and on weekends in October.

The reception buildings of the on-the-go stations are privately owned.
