The Waren (Müritz) –Malchin railway is a disused single-track branch line in the Mecklenburg Lake District district of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It connects the city of Waren (Müritz) on the Neustrelitz – Warnemünde railway with Malchin on the Bützow – Szczecin railway . Passenger traffic was discontinued in 1996 and the line was closed two years later.

Route

The route was built from Malchin. It starts out east of the Malchiner train station from the main line Bützow – Szczecin and leads to the south-southwest. The first stop was in Gielow , the largest place on the route between the terminal stations. The next stop was in a wood not far from the village of Langwitz, but was named after the community Basedow - probably because of the greater importance of Basedow. At Schwinkendorf the railway turned south, followed by the Levenstorf and Schönau- Falkenhagen stops. The last kilometers before Waren, the railway line runs parallel to Landstrasse 202 and the west bank of Lake Tiefwarensee .

The 28-kilometer route was opened on November 9, 1879 along its entire length. The Mecklenburg Friedrich-Franz Railway (MFFE), founded in 1875, was responsible for construction and management . With its completion, the railway represented the first railway connection in the city of Waren. However, after the opening of the Mecklenburg Southern Railway in 1885 and the Lloyd Railway Berlin – Neustrelitz – Rostock in 1886, the importance of the line decreased considerably. Passenger traffic was limited to a few pairs of trains per day. After the Malchin – Dargun railway was opened in 1907, these were mostly tied through to Dargun . Among other things, gravel was removed in freight traffic, as there was an opencast mine to the west of the route near Basedow. The traffic initially took place until 1930, after the completion of a concrete plant in Malchin it was resumed in 1960.

The route experienced a brief upswing after the Second World War. After both the Neustrelitz – Warnemünde and the Parchim – Neubrandenburg railway had been dismantled as a reparation payment , the line to Malchin was the only railway connection for Waren, just as it was when it opened. In 1960 six pairs of passenger trains ran on the route, after the reopening of the Neustrelitz – Warnemünde line in the early 1960s, the number of trains was halved again. The three trains per day and direction remained until passenger traffic was discontinued in 1996. Freight traffic was also discontinued on January 1, 1996. The efforts of the Deutsche Bahn AG to find a private operator for the freight traffic failed, so that the railway was shut down on November 30, 1998. After the closure, the route in the Malchin urban area was interrupted for the reconstruction of the through- road of federal highway 104 .

Since 2009, the section from Waren freight yard to Schwinkendorf has been used for tourism as a bicycle trolley route.
