The Parchim – Neubrandenburg or Mecklenburgische Südbahn is a railway line in the south of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It was operated by the Mecklenburgische Südbahn-Gesellschaft, which became part of the Friedrich-Franz-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft in 1894. Today the Möllenhagen - Neubrandenburg section has been dismantled, while the rest of the route from Parchim to Waren (Müritz) is operated by Regio Infra Nord-Ost GmbH .

history

Mecklenburg Southern Railway

The Mecklenburgische Südbahn-Gesellschaft was founded in Parchim in 1883 to extend the Ludwigslust – Parchim railway to the east to connect to the Friedrich-Franz-Eisenbahn in Neubrandenburg in Mecklenburg-Strelitz . The shareholders were the cities of Parchim, Lübz , Waren (Müritz), Penzlin and Neubrandenburg, the Norddeutsche Bank in Hamburg and the local railway operating company in Hamburg. On July 20, 1883, the concession was granted by Mecklenburg-Schwerin and on August 2, 1883 by Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

Freight traffic was opened on both routes on January 20, 1885, and passenger traffic followed a week later on January 28, 1885. Originally, the local railway operating company from Hamburg was supposed to operate the route. Management was later transferred to the central administration for Secundairbahnen Herrmann Bachstein in Berlin.

The traffic on the route was mostly local. Until 1888, the company's balance sheets showed a negative result.

In the course of the nationalization efforts of the Mecklenburg government, this acquired the Mecklenburg Southern Railway on April 1, 1894 at the same time as the Lloyd Railway and incorporated them into the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Friedrich-Franz Railway . In this their eight locomotives taken.

State-owned operation

After the establishment of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in 1920, it took over operations on the line. In 1945 the Karow – Malchow and Kargow – Neubrandenburg sections were dismantled as a reparation payment. In 1946, a reconstruction began in Kargow in the direction of Neubrandenburg, but only as far as Möllenhagen. This section reopened in June 1947. On June 1, 1968, the gap between Karow and Malchow was closed again. Passenger traffic on what is now the branch line to Möllenhagen was discontinued in 1970, but the route continued to be used for goods traffic to today's Durtrack concrete plant, a large producer of concrete sleepers. Since June 1, 1996, the line from Kargow to Möllenhagen has been a station track of the Kargow station.

After 2000

The dismantled section from Möllenhagen to Neubrandenburg is now used as a cycle path . The Kargow – Möllenhagen section is used by freight traffic to the Möllenhagen concrete sleeper plant. It is mainly handled by DB Cargo Deutschland . The passenger traffic on the Parchim – Waren – Kargow section and on towards Neustrelitz was operated from December 2002 to December 2014 by the ODEG .

The Prignitzer railway infrastructure GmbH (PEI) leased the railway tracks of the section of 1 March 2008 Karow (Meckl) to Waren (Müritz) from the DB Netz , later came into the possession of the company. RegioInfra Gesellschaft mbH (RIG) has been operating this section since July 10, 2012 . RegioInfra had taken over the PEI retrospectively as of January 1, 2012. In December 2012 the Inselstadt Malchow stop was opened, which is located a little south of the Malchow train station in a more convenient location to the city center. The old station has not been served by passenger trains since then, but is still used for train crossings.

Also in December 2012, however, the offer on the route was east of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in from Lübz due to extensive austerity measures SPNV significantly reduced. Since various connections were canceled in the morning and in the evening and the others were often very poorly coordinated with long waiting times, there has been no continuous two-hour service since then.

In March 2012, the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania withdrew the tender for “Lot Parchim”, which also includes traffic on the southern runway, in order to identify potential savings. On September 13, 2013, Transport Minister Schlotmann announced the suspension of rail traffic on most of the route. Buses have been running between Malchow and Parchim since December 2014. The R3 line continues to operate on the route from Hagenow to Parchim. Trains through the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are only ordered between the island town of Malchow and Waren, with the offer being limited to six pairs of trips a day. DB Regio operates these trains under the line designation RB15. Rarely also run more freight trains to army depot, which east of Warenshof its own rail siding has.

In view of the discontinuation of the local rail transport and upcoming investments, DB Netz declared that it could no longer operate the section between Parchim and Karow economically and therefore put it out to tender at the end of January 2014 for sale to other railway infrastructure companies . At the beginning of December 2014, the Regio Infra Nord-Ost (RIN) took over the Parchim - Karow section from DB Netz.

DB Cargo has been transporting wood to the Malchow building yard since August 2016.

After the cancellation of the section Inselstadt Malchow - Parchim on December 14, 2014, the Hanseatische Eisenbahn (HANS), which is part of a group of companies, initially took over the local rail transport between Inselstadt Malchow and Parchim. However, HANS stopped the traffic again on April 30, 2015, because there was no financial support from the state and the districts and because the parallel bus traffic represented competition.

In the summer of 2017, the Pro Bahn passenger association ordered a small seasonal service on the southern railway and on the Güstrow – Plau route on four weekends, on the occasion of the Malchower Volksfest and the Plauer bathtub rally . Around 600 passengers took advantage of this offer. Financial support from the public sector was sought for the coming years. With the help of a grant from the Ludwigslust-Parchim district , the offer was expanded to six weekends in summer 2018. Seasonal traffic was again offered on four summer weekends in 2019, with a pair of trains from Parchim to the Wittstock State Garden Show with a change in Pritzwalk on seven Thursdays .

With the timetable change on December 9, 2017, the responsibility for regional transport on the remaining section Inselstadt Malchow - Waren was transferred to the district of Mecklenburg Lake District . The state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will pay an annual subsidy of initially 650,000 euros over the next ten years, which will later be reduced to 420,000 euros. The district plans to award the transport services for a period of eight years from December 2019. The award is to be made in the district council meeting on September 23, 2019. [outdated]

During the construction work at Waren (Müritz) train station , the route between Malchow and Waren was closed for 13 weeks (from April 6 to July 20, 2019). Work was carried out on setting up the technically supported train control operation (ZLB) .

The Regio Infra Nord-Ost GmbH & Co. KG announced on April 3, 2019 that it would shut down the line between Parchim and Malchow . On November 18, 2019, the state government announced that an agreement had been reached with the owner to maintain the route and to increase its attractiveness, for example through additional traffic in the summer season.

From Easter 2020, traffic between Malchow and Parchim is to be resumed on the weekends in the summer half-year. The new train concept provides for trains from Waren to Karow, where you can change to trains to Parchim and Plau am See on the Güstrow – Meyenburg railway line . Trains run from Plau am See via Karow to Parchim, where they connect to trains to Ludwigslust and Schwerin.

Route description

Route

The 117-kilometer route connected the district town of Parchim with the Neubrandenburg railway junction. It was the continuation of the Parchim-Ludwigsluster Railway and, after crossing the Elde, led via Lübz and Karow north of the Great Lakes to Waren (Müritz), then used almost seven kilometers of the Lloydbahn Warnemünde – Güstrow – Neustrelitz to Kargow and finally branched off to the east Penzlin to Neubrandenburg.

Parchim

The Parchim station touched or touched a total of four railway lines. In addition to the Parchim – Neubrandenburg line, these include the Ludwigslust – Parchim , Schwerin – Parchim and formerly Parchim – Suckow lines . In 2000 the station was extensively rebuilt. The depot and most of the freight transport facilities were dismantled after there was no longer any scheduled freight traffic. Before the track diagram interlocking was used, three mechanical interlockings regulated the traffic. The station building and a number of other buildings in the station area are under monument protection.

The house and central platforms are barrier-free, 100 meters long and have a platform height of 55 centimeters, which is suitable for the railcars used .

Rome (Meckl)

The Rome stop is now closed. It was still a train station until 1994. The last scheduled train stopped here in 1996. The station building is a listed building.

Luebz (Meckl)

Before the expansion of the station for the mineral wool plant, the station in the city of Lübz had only one mechanical signal box despite the high volume of traffic. As part of a station extension, Lübz received a track diagram signal box. At times the East German Railway parked its railcars in the station. The station building is a listed building.

Passow (Meckl)

From 1991, the former Passow train station was only a stop with a gatekeeper. In 1994 it was converted into a breakpoint. The half-barrier was replaced in 1999 by an EBüt system.

Gallin

Gallin is equipped with a mechanical signal box. The loading tracks and the second main track were dismantled in 2004. Since then, Gallin has only been a stopping point. Here, too, the signal-dependent level crossing is replaced by an EBüt system.

Zarchlin

In 1991 the station was converted into a bus stop. Three years later, all track systems with the exception of the main track were dismantled. The operating point was converted into a breakpoint again. Zarchlin has not been served since 1996.

Karow (Meckl)

Karow is the junction of three railway lines. There has been no regular passenger traffic since 2015. The reception building and other buildings are listed.

Old Schwerin

Until the line in the section was dismantled as a reparation payment, there was a train station in Alt Schwerin. With the reconstruction of the route in 1968, Alt Schwerin went into operation as a stopping point. In the 1970s, it was expanded into a train station for military reasons. In 1990 it was downgraded to a stop. A decaying signal box can still be seen.

Island town of Malchow

On December 6, 2012, the new stop went into operation, which is closer to the city center than the Malchow train station and is barrier-free. There were u. a. Parking and bicycle spaces.

Malchow (Meckl)

The Malchow train station hardly changed until 2012. By connecting a building yard, there is a certain volume of goods. Two mechanical signal boxes, a locomotive shed that is no longer needed and an old goods floor are part of the facilities. Until 2014, the station was the crossing point for passenger trains on the largely single-track line; however, since the end of 2012 it has no longer been used to get passengers on and off. The station building and some other buildings in the station area are listed.

Nossentin

Initially Nossentin was a train station, soon afterwards a stop. In the 1970s, the station was expanded for military purposes. In 1990 the station was downgraded. A restricted level crossing that still existed at the time was replaced by a stop light system. The station building is a listed building.

Jabel (Meckl)

Since 1994 the former Jabel train station has only been a stopping point. The signal-dependent level crossings have been replaced by EBüt systems. The station building is a listed building.

Schwenzin

The Schwenzin stop has not undergone any major changes. It is now also equipped with an Ebüt system. During the construction of this facility, a local guard secured this level crossing.

Warehouse

Warenshof is a previously unchanged stopping point, which now also has an Ebüt facility.

Goods (Müritz)

The station went into operation in 1885 with the opening of the Mecklenburg Southern Railway and replaced a station that had existed since 1879 on the Waren – Malchin railway in a different location. In 1886 the Neustrelitz – Warnemünde line was added. Traffic on the route to Malchin was stopped in 1996. Waren was an important hub and always a stop for long-distance trains; Even today, individual IC trains still stop . The station building and other facilities in the station are under monument protection.

Waren (Müritz) Papenbergstrasse

In 1977 the Papenbergstrasse stop went out of service. The old bus shelter was demolished in 2004.

Kargow

The Kargow halt was opened in 1885. A year later, the expansion to the station followed; Here the Lloydbahn from Neustrelitz met the Südbahn. After 1945 the tracks were dismantled as a reparation payment to the Soviet Union; soon afterwards the southern line to Möllenhagen was rebuilt. Around 1960 the railway line from Neustrelitz to Rostock went back into operation. In 1970 the last passenger train ran to Möllenhagen ; the freight traffic continued. Since September 2011 the Kargow station has not been operated at all for passenger traffic. With the expansion of the railway line from Neustrelitz, the dispatcher was also withdrawn from the station, the listed station building is empty.

Charlottenhof

At first, Charlottenhof was just a barrier post. In 1889 a siding to the distillery in Kargow was built. In 1946 a platform was built, which now made Charlottenhof a stop. The connection was closed in 1963. Passenger traffic on the route section has been suspended since 1970, so that Charlottenhof was only a barrier post until it was closed in 1980. The former station building is used privately.

Schwastorf-Dratow

In 1885 the Schwastorf-Dratow stop was opened with a loading point and barrier post. Freight traffic was stopped in 1963. From 1970 only the barrier post remained, which was finally closed in 1972. Since then, the level crossing has not been technically secured. The station building is used privately and is a listed building.

Small plastic

The Klein Plasten stop went into operation in 1885. It had a platform, loading point, goods floor and barrier posts. From 1924 to 1945 there was no freight traffic; In 1947 he was resumed. In 1970 Klein Plasten was closed. The level crossing received an automatic half-barrier.

Kraase

The Kraase stop had a loading point for goods traffic until 1963. In 1970 it was closed.

Möllenhagen

With the opening of the southern runway, the stop went into operation. Möllenhagen was the train station since 1924. A siding to a ballast works was built in 1925. Until 1945 extensive freight traffic took place. In 1947 passenger traffic to Möllenhagen was resumed, which was discontinued in 1970. A manned goods handling facility existed until 1995 and a shunting ladder was in use until 1997. Freight trains still regularly serve the concrete plant, which has its own plant locomotive and extensive track systems. The station building is a listed building.

Marihn

The section around Marihn was not rebuilt. In 1947 the tracks were dismantled. A residential building, the embankment and a goods ramp can still be seen.

Penzlin (Meckl)

The reception building of the Penzlin train station has been preserved and is a listed building. Today's bypass runs directly at the train station.

Mallin

The former station building is now in private hands.

Wulkenzin

The Wulkenzin train station building has since been demolished.

Neubrandenburg

Neubrandenburg station is the crossing station of the Berlin Northern Railway and the Bützow – Stettin railway line . It used to be connected to the Südbahn and the Neubrandenburg – Friedland railway. The station building and several outbuildings are under monument protection.
