uPhongolo (also Uphongolo ; English uPhongolo Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the South African district of Zululand in the province of KwaZulu-Natal . The administrative seat of the municipality is Pongola . MM Hadebe is the mayor. The ANC holds most of the seats on the local council.

The municipality is named after the Uphongolo River , which is also called Pongola. In 2011 the community had 127,238 inhabitants. It covers an area of ​​3239 square kilometers.

geography

uPhongolo is located in the north of the Zululand district and borders Swaziland and the Mpumalanga Province . The N2 offers the community a good connection to the transport network. The Mkuze and the Pongola flow through the territory of the municipality. In the east is the Pongolapoort reservoir , whose tributary is the Pongola.

The only town in the municipality is Pongola.

population

In 2011 the community had 127,238 inhabitants. Of these, 98.1% were black and 1.5% white.

The first language was 93.8% isiZulu , 1.5% Afrikaans , 1.2% isiNdebele and 1.1% English.

economy

Since uPhongola is a largely rural area, most of its economic activity consists of agriculture and tourism. Mainly sugar cane and citrus fruits are grown. Since the raw products are often taken to other industrial centers for further processing, there is little potential for the community to create new jobs. Other employers in the municipality are construction and the public sector.

  • Pongola nature reserve: According to its own information, it is the oldest game reserve in South Africa and was founded in 1894 by President Paul Kruger . Closed due to the Second Boer War , the Pongola nature reserve was opened in the same area in 1964.
  • Pongolapoort Reservoir: It was built to irrigate the surrounding areas and is the third largest lake in South Africa. The lake is known by anglers for the tiger tetra .
