eDumbe (also Edumbe ; English eDumbe Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the South African district of Zululand in the province of KwaZulu-Natal . The administrative seat of the municipality is Paulpietersburg . Bonginkosi Nxusa is the mayor. The NFP provides the majority in the municipal council.

The municipality is named after the eDumbe mountain. The word eDumbe comes from the isiZulu term Amadumbe , which refers to a potato-like tuber that grows on the slopes of the mountain. The parish covers an area of ​​1943 square kilometers.

geography

eDumbe is located to the north of KwaZulu-Natal and to the northwest of the Zululand District and borders the Mpumalanga Province . Over three quarters of the community population lives in rural areas.

The only town in the municipality is Paulpietersburg.

population

In 2011 the community had 82,053 inhabitants. Of these, 97.8% were black and 1.8% white.

The first language was 93.3% isiZulu , 1.3% English, 1.2% isiNdebele and 1.1% Afrikaans .

economy

eDumbe has a train station in Paulpietersburg and is thus connected to the South African rail network. The R33 runs through the area of ​​the municipality and offers a good connection to the long-distance network.

The economic pillars of the municipality are agriculture and tourism. Logging, corn growing, and livestock farming are most common in eDumbe. Some processing companies have also settled around Paulpietersburg.

eDumbe is known for its hot springs. There is a wellness center near Paulpietersburg, the Natal Spa Hot Springs Resort & Conference Center . The water is rich in minerals and very suitable for baths. You can visit some historical sites.

Attractions

  • The Egode River Monument on the Egode River marks the place where Louis Botha signed the peace treaty with the British , which ended the Second Boer War .
  • At the Battle of Ntombe during the Zulu War , the Zulu captured a British wagon castle in 1879. The battlefield can be visited.
  • The Kruger Bridge is an old bridge south of Paulpietersburg. It was built across the Bivane River during Paul Kruger's last tenure .
  • In Paulpietersburg there are several old buildings that can be visited, for example the library, which used to be a Dutch Reformed church , or the Old Drosty , a former British colonial building. Both structures have meanwhile been declared state monuments.
