Ulundi ( English Ulundi Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the South African district of Zululand in the province of KwaZulu-Natal . The administrative seat of the municipality is Ulundi . NJ Manana is the mayor. The IFP has the majority in the local council.

Ulundi is isiZulu and stands for 'a high place'. The name comes from the kraal that King Cetshwayo built in 1873. The kraal was originally called Ondini , but the British called it Ulundi . The municipality covers an area of 3250 square kilometers.

geography

Ulundi is located in the northeast of KwaZulu-Natal and in the south of the Zululand district. The only town in the parish is Ulundi. Other important settlements are Kwambambo , Mahlabathini , Dingaanstat , Nkonjeni and Dlebe .

population

In 2011 the community had 188,317 inhabitants. 99.5% of them were black.

The first language was 94.8% isiZulu , 1.3% English and 1.1% isiNdebele .

economy

The economic center of the municipality is the city of Ulundi. The entire community is supplied with the necessary goods from here.

Ulundi's economy is based on agriculture . About half of the area in Ulundi is used for commercial agriculture. The main pillars are the timber industry, the cultivation of sugar cane and tropical fruits, animal husbandry and agriculture. Most of the commercial farming takes place in the Babanango Valley, west of Babanango, as the soil is of excellent quality for this purpose. A manufacturing branch is currently emerging through the promotion of agriculture.

Tourism is another mainstay for Ulundi. There is a lot of potential for the expansion of this industry, as Ulundi is in the center of the Zululand with nature parks and cultural and historical sites.

The relocation of the administrative headquarters of the province of KwaZulu-Natal to Pietermaritzburg lost many jobs in the public sector. The city of Ulundi and Pietermaritzburg had previously shared the administrative headquarters.
