The desert and glass nature reserve is a section of the terminal moraine landscape between the municipalities of Lalendorf and Vollrathsruhe in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which has been designated a nature reserve . It was placed under protection on June 22, 1994 and covers an area of 342 hectares.

Large parts of the nature reserve are part of the FFH area of forest and small water bodies south of Teterow .

Characteristic for the area is a strongly moving relief with forest, meadows, block packs, piles of reading stones and border hedges. Due to the privacy and the low level of use, the state of the area is considered to be very good.

history

The Germanic castle wall to the west of the Ohgangsee indicates a settlement from prehistoric times. The area was grazed and used as a hut forest for centuries . In the Schmettauschen map from 1788, a smaller proportion of forest can be seen compared to today. The high relief energy, remoteness and impassability of the terrain led to the preservation of the abundance of boulders. Today the open land is mainly used as cattle pasture.

Water balance

Due to the location in the terminal moraine, there are numerous drainage-free depressions.

Flora

The forest areas are planted with pearl grass beech forest . Typical species for this are real lungwort , forest ringwort and liverwort . Due to the history of use, there are small areas of oak and hornbeam forests . A large number of rock mosses in humid, shaded locations settle on the boulders. Typical types of bog (alder break) in the area are water feather , iris and lady fern . The meadows are mostly planted with nutrient-rich grassland, with crested grass pastures in places .

Wildlife

A large population of swamp crabs has been identified in the Ohgangsee . Promotes the one hand, the damp of the area, numerous species of amphibians, such as fire-bellied toad , tree frog , grass and moor frog . On the other hand, heat-loving reptiles such as the sand lizard can be observed on the boulders . The grassland belongs to the feeding area of the lesser spotted eagle . Breeding birds are crane , gray goose , red kite , honey buzzard , miniature flycatcher and middle woodpecker .

Ownership

Since 2007, 140 hectares of the protected areas have been owned by the Manfred Hermsen Foundation . In 2008 the nature reserve was expanded from 190 to 342 hectares.
