Griever Holz nature reserve

The nature reserve Griever Holz is a deciduous forest area designated as a nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The surrounding villages are called Grieve, Polchow and Stechow (municipality of Walkendorf ).

It was placed under protection on September 22, 1990 and covers an area of 200 hectares. The state of the area is good. The NABU Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is committed to the further development of the reserve.

history

Past forms of use are documented in the Wiebeking map of 1786. The proportion of forest in the protected area and the surrounding areas was significantly higher. The areas belonged to the Dalwitz and Prebberede estates well into the 20th century . After the land reform in 1945, new farmers removed large amounts of wood without reforestation. In 1960 the rights of use were transferred to the State Forestry Company. In the undisturbed bald areas, a natural development could begin.

In 2006, NABU Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania received 116 hectares from Bodenverwertungs- und -verwaltungs GmbH as part of the national natural heritage and is endeavoring to further protect the spotted eagle. Extensive wetland renaturation work was carried out in 2011.

Water balance

The area drains into the Recknitz via the Polchow brook to the west . In the central part there are also sinks without drainage.

Flora and fauna

The forest areas are mostly planted with woodruff beech forest . In the western part of the area there are kettle bogs with cotton grass , bog birch , swamp porst and peat moss . 62 different types of mushrooms were identified.

Black storks and spotted eagles are documented as breeding birds , the latter also with breeding success in 2009.
