history

The giltzsee is embedded in a sand up to 30 meters thick. The area was settled in the Slav period. The name of the gilt goes back to the Slavic word for heather. In the 18th century, a glassworks was operated northeast of the bank, which used the fine sand and the existing wood as raw materials. The Schmettausche map from 1794 shows the area largely free of forests. The existing arable land was afforested in the 19th century.

Flora and fauna

With its clear water, the giltzsee has a great depth of view, so that chandelier algae and spawning herbs can grow up to four meters deep. A silting bog with peat moss , pipe grass , pine and birch is on the north shore of the lake. Numerous bats live in the area.
