It was placed under protection on August 8, 1932, with an extension on November 21, 2000, it covers an area of 1189 hectares and aims to permanently maintain a moderately nutrient-rich lake with the adjacent forest, moor and meadow areas. With the protection status, the area is also protected as a wetland of international importance according to the Ramsar Convention . The nature reserve is located in the Nossentiner / Schwinzer Heide nature reserve .

Despite continuous nutrient inputs from neighboring agricultural areas and net cages in a fish farm, the state of the area is considered to be good. Predators influence the breeding success of numerous meadow breeders.

Two observation towers at Glave and on the north bank give a good overview of the area. It can be viewed via a hiking trail between Wadehäng in Krakow and the Dobbin pond.

The meso- to eutrophic lake is traversed by the fog and belongs to the area of influence of the Warnow . The maximum water depth is 28.3 meters.

The nature reserve is part of the FFH area Nebeltal with tributaries, connected lakes and adjacent forests .

history

A Slavic settlement with a castle complex was found on a peninsula on the east bank of the lake, north of the island of Lindwerder . On the Wiebeking maps from 1786, pasture use of the southern bank areas is documented; the islands are covered with hardwood and probably also grazed. In 1884, a dam was raised when the Krakow - Dobbin road was built, separating the Obersee from the Krakow Untersee. The Obersee has been fished with fish traps and draw nets for centuries. On the east bank trout was fattened in net cages until 1990, which led to very high nutrient inputs. In addition, nutrients from agriculture were brought in on a large scale during the GDR era. The island of Großer Werder was fertilized with agricultural aircraft from Möllen. The lake has been closed to pleasure craft traffic all year round since 1981.

Flora and fauna

The increased humidity on the islands leads to the occurrence of near-natural high forests with sycamore maple , summer linden , sycamore elm , common beech and common oak . The banks are lined with large reed beds. The Große Werder is free from forests and is grazed with cattle. There are small sedge lawns with broad-leaved orchid . Primroses , nodular saxifrage and nodular buttercups settle on the higher elevations with dry poor pasture . Large sedge stands can be found on the grazed shores of the lake .

The extensive food supply of aquatic plants and mollusks favors breeding and resting birds. Strong populations of mallard and gadfly have been demonstrated. Black-headed gull and common tern as well as the cormorant with 525 breeding pairs form colonies . Meadow breeders are redshank , snipe and lapwing . Outside the breeding season, the area is of great importance as a migration and resting area. Up to 6,000 white-fronted geese and bean geese are counted annually, and up to 3,000 tufted ducks . Ospreys and white-tailed eagles regularly hunt the lake.
