The Brooksee nature reserve is a 24 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It was designated on July 5, 1999 with the aim of preserving a rewetted water basin as a habitat for water birds. The protected area is located 4 kilometers north of Schwaan and east of highway 13 at the junction to Benitz . It was named after the town of Brookhusen, not far to the north .

The state of the area is considered to be good. The water dynamics of the lake prevent the islands from being forested, so that black-headed gull colonies can form, in whose protection other waterfowl also breed. Half of the area (12.5 hectares) is owned by the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Nature Conservation Union.

There are no public roads in the area. An observation pulpit on the east bank allows very good viewing opportunities.

History and water balance

The Brooksee is embedded in a ground moraine landscape with strong relief that was created by the last glaciation . There are several parallel depressions between Buchholz and Schwaan in the area. The Brooker See is one of them. In the following years the lake silted up in peripheral areas and formed a small boiler moor in the north . The area of the lake is shown in the Schmettauschen map from 1788. The lake was drained by a ditch that was created in the 19th century and the edge areas were used as grassland until the 1950s . Subsequently, agricultural use was given up and the drainage system fell into disrepair. Due to the rainy winter of 1962/63, a larger lake area formed again, which continued to expand in the following years and in places reached the Brookhusen settlement. To prevent the lake from rising further, a ditch was dug in 1981, which drains the lake in a southerly direction towards the Beke .

Flora and fauna

Remnants of the former trees protrude from the lake as dead remains. A wide reed border with reeds and broad-leaved cattails surrounds the lake. Willow and alder bushes adjoin.

In the area of live grass snake , grass , marsh , water and tree frog and toad and fire-bellied toad .

The island in the southern part of the lake are dammed in the winter and fall until the spring dry, then birds like Tern , Lapwing , Knäk- and teal and minke and Red-necked Grebe to serve as a breeding site. The area is also of particular importance as a resting and migration area for gadgets , pygmy swans , snaps , sandpipers and water striders as well as blue and gray goose .
