Groß Potremser Moor nature reserve

The Groß Potremser Moor nature reserve is a nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania east of the village of Groß Potrems . The first designation as a nature reserve took place on December 15, 1957 and was valid until the deletion in 1983. A new designation took place on September 28, 1990 with an extension in 1993. The reserve area has since then covered 184 hectares. The purpose of protection is to maintain and develop a raised bog .

The state of the area is classified as unsatisfactory. Drainage and uses in the past still show their consequences today, which have been counteracted with renaturation measures since 1993. The areas serve as a research object for rewetting a raised bog .

The area can be viewed from the federal highway 103 to the west . The Göldenitzer Moor is one kilometer further east .

History and water balance

Today's protected areas were created during the last Ice Age as excavations up to ten meters deep. The subsequent open lake silted up with a break forest. A raised moor up to three meters thick could develop in the central part. The only natural drainage of the moor is the Zarnowbach , which flows west towards the Warnow .

The Wiebekingsche map from 1786 shows the Moor in Hutenutzung . From the 19th century the area was drained and peat ditches were made. A month-long peat fire in 1911 led to the disappearance of much of the peat. The use of peat was thus unprofitable and peat mining stopped. The area wooded. The edge areas of today's protected area were used as grassland. Renaturation work began with the re-designation as a nature reserve in 1990. The hydrological conditions were improved by interrupting drainage and building dams. The grassland areas were converted into nature conservation-friendly grassland use.

Grass snakes , forest lizards and pond frogs occur. Notable breeding birds, most of which have only appeared in the last few years, are the little grebe , woodcock , sparrowhawk , sprout and whorl .
