The Ribnitzer Großes Moor nature reserve is a nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It is located east of Graal-Müritz in the Ribnitz-Damgarten municipal forest. Three quarters of the area is in the Vorpommern-Rügen district , while a quarter (the western part) is in the Rostock district. The Ribnitz Great Moor combines different types - from low moor to high moor and all associated transitional forms - due to the high salt content and the extent to the Baltic Sea, continental and maritime flora meet in this moor.

history

Entrance area

The bog took place around eleven to twelve thousand years ago. Extensive peeling has taken place for centuries. The 273.88 hectares of moorland were placed under protection in 1939. In 1934 and 1947, parts of the moor burned out. Until 1950, the center and the Neuhauser part of the area were pitted mechanically. To do this, the moor was drained. From 1975 the city forester built staues on the edge with the aim of improving the hydrological conditions. At present, two thirds of the area of the nature reserve is still forested with pines and birches . This proportion is expected to decrease in the coming years, with bush clearing only being effective if the water level is raised at the same time.

Another extensive renaturation program took place between 1996 and 1998. The sharp drop in the water level caused peat to decompose, releasing large amounts of carbon dioxide and nitrogen compounds . The work began with hydrological and hydrogeological investigations as well as vegetation mapping. The two scientists Michael Giersberg and Axel Precker were won over for this.

The renaturation is a successful joint project of the city of Ribnitz-Damgarten with support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Nature Conservation Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the “Prince Nature Support” Hamburg foundation. The annual monitoring shows clear improvements.

The information center sees itself as an institution for environmental education and is aimed in particular at the schools in the region in order to hold natural history educational events on site. It is open from Wednesday to Sunday during the day from the beginning of May to the end of October.

The nature trail across from the information center is open all year round. For hikers and nature lovers, the information center offers a guided hike every Wednesday from 10 a.m. The tour extends over approximately 7.5 kilometers and takes two and a half to three hours.
