The nature reserve Borgwallsee and Pütter See is a nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania six kilometers southwest of Stralsund . The 555 hectare area includes the Borgwallsee , the Pütter See and adjacent areas. It was expelled by ordinance on June 9, 1997. Surrounding towns are, in addition to the Hanseatic city, the places Pantelitz , Lüssow and Negast . The area is part of the FFH area Krummhagener See, Borgwallsee and Pütter See .

The state of the area is considered to be satisfactory, since a sustained high supply of nutrients leads to further eutrophication of the lakes.

The federal highways 105 and 194 form the northern and eastern borders of the area. Entry is possible on the south bank of the Borgwallsee on designated hiking trails.

History and water balance

The areas of the nature reserve are located in a ground moraine landscape with few lakes that was created during the last ice age . Both lakes form source lakes for the Barthe River and were originally connected by a 17 meter deep depression that was filled with digested sludge and peat . In the following millennia, the edge areas of the lakes were moored with current bogs up to two meters thick .

The outflow towards the north to the Barthe is regulated by a weir.

On the peninsula of Lake Borgwall to the south, there is evidence of a refuge from the Slav period. From 1242 onwards, the Neuenkamp monastery began fishing . From 1256, the mill ditch was created to supply the nearby town of Stralsund with drinking water and to drive water mills. Even today, the city of Stralsund and the Lüssow waterworks get their drinking water from the Borgwallsee.

Flora and fauna

The high nutrient content in both lakes leads to their own flora. 261 plant species were identified. Blue-green algae can be found all year round in the polytrophic Pütter See and in summer in the eutrophic Borgwallsee. Numerous species of pondweed ( crested pondweed , streaked pondweed) and pond roses can be found in the sheltered bays. Chandelier algae ground lawns still grow on the west bank of the Borgwallsee on sandy soils. Both lakes have large spawn dive corridors and pond rose floating leaf corridors. Crab claws are found in trenches . A narrow reed zone with reeds and common pond sill surrounds the lakes. More than 50 breeding birds have been identified. Ospreys and white-tailed eagles hunt in the area. The otter can be found all year round.
