The Wittenhagen nature reserve is a 179 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, 12 kilometers south of Stralsund . The eponymous place Wittenhagen is located three kilometers to the east. It was placed under protection on December 12, 1957 with an extension in 1972. The protection area includes a forest area with old trees.

The current state of the area is assessed as unsatisfactory. A network of trenches with the strip trench drains the areas in the direction of Barthe and planted conifers inhibit natural development. The area is very easy to enter on public roads.

history

The protected area is embedded in a flat ground moraine landscape. Non-local conifers such as spruce were planted in the 20th century.

Flora and fauna

The area is characterized by different humid locations. At higher altitudes there is beech forest with ash and alder in moist depressions. The nature reserve is home to rare species of birds such as wood sandpiper , stock dove , crane , woodcock and middle woodpecker .
