history
The thorn bush emerged as a compression moraine lobe during the last ice age . The Schwedenhagener Ufer lies on a ground moraine that formed at the same time. The thorn bush, which originally consisted of a mixed oak forest, was burned down in 1628 when Wallenstein ruled over the island. The ash layer can still be seen today in the soil profiles. It was not until 1860 that attempts were made to reforest the areas with pine trees . The renewable wood was used as fuel. The regular clearing led to the stick rash and to light location conditions. In 1962, the construction of the dyke began in the Dornbusch area. The previously active cliff of the Hucke was cut off from the sea by the construction of a massive stone dam.
Flora and fauna
Warmth-loving animal and plant species were able to settle on the south-facing slope of the Dornbusch. Pedunculate oak grows there with meadow primrose , forest twinkle and common potted fern in the undergrowth. Chaffinch , Fitis , yellow mockers , dunnock and warbler species can be observed as breeding birds .
On the Schwedenhagener Ufer, hornbeam and mountain elm grow with elder , sloe , dogwood , cornel cherry and eucoat . Wild rabbits live there and were found in large numbers just a few decades ago, before myxomatosis led to herd decline.
