The nature reserve Schoritzer Wiek is a 437 hectare nature reserve on Rügen and the Schoritzer Wiek bay in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It provides a rich indented part of the lagoon area . Typical habitats are brackish water reeds, reeds, salt marshes, beach ridges, dunes, wind flats and the flat portions of the adjacent Greifswald Bodden . The current protected area designation took place on April 22, 1984, whereby the area had this status from August 7, 1937 to April 30, 1963. The state of the area is considered to be satisfactory, as predators and disturbances by anglers, boaters and surfers hinder the breeding success of the coastal birds. Parts of the protected area are accessible on public roads.

history

The areas of today's protected area were shaped by the last icing phase over 10,000 years ago. The thawing of the ice and the associated rise in sea level led to the flooding of the Schoritzer Wiek during the Littorina transgression . As a peninsula, the Silmenitzer Heide separates the Schoritzer Wiek bay from the rest of the Rügischer Bodden . Human use of the surrounding areas has been documented for centuries and is essentially limited to pasture use. The dry locations of the Silmenitzer Heide were afforested with pine trees in the 1950s. The Schoritzer Wiek is used by professional fishermen from Zudar .

Flora and fauna

The aquatic vegetation of the Schoritzer Wiek is occupied by comb spawning grass . Reeds made of reeds line the shore, with salt marshes with salt pond ridge , beach trident , salt aster , white ostrich grass and red fescue . A coastal flood moor has formed on the west side of the Silmenitzer Heide. Grazing results in poor grass on beach ridges , which when abandoned becomes bushy with gorse and hawthorn . Typical breeding birds in the area are redshank , ringed plover , oystercatcher , middle saunter , shelduck , tufted duck and great crested grebe . The white-tailed eagle is common. In spring and autumn, gray , white- fronted , blue-headed , Canada , barnacle and brent goose use the area as a resting place. Limikolen , such as curlew , dunlin and golden plover can be observed on the mudflats .
