The Neuendorfer Wiek nature reserve with Beuchel Island is a 550 hectare nature reserve on the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The island of Beuchel was expelled on July 25, 1940. In 1999 and 2004, the Neuendorfer Wiek was expanded .

Surrounding villages are Trent and Neuenkirchen . The purpose of protection is to preserve a characteristic and representative section of the northern Rügen lagoon chain , which has numerous rare and endangered biotope types and is considered a habitat for a rich fish fauna and various breeding and resting birds.

The nature reserve is in good condition. Since the beginning of the 1990s, however, efforts to remove gravel from parts of the site that were not finally abandoned until 2011 have stood in the way of the protection goal. The previously controversial area has now also been placed under permanent protection.

The nature reserve is protected under EU law as part of the FFH area Nordrügensche Boddenlandschaft and the bird sanctuary Binnenbodden von Rügen .

The nature reserve can be viewed from the surrounding streets.

history

The area was created by the last ice advances of the Vistula Ice Age . Oser can be found north of Zessin. The areas on the bank have been used extensively as salt marshes for centuries. The lack of dykes resulted in periodic flooding. The southern Neuendorfer Wiek was diked towards the end of the 19th century and drained by means of two wind pumping stations . In the reed bank areas, reed advertising took place in the winter months . Trap fishing has been practiced on the water surface for centuries . The Oszug was grazed with sheep and horses until the 1950s and used as arable land until 1990.

Flora and fauna

Typical of the nature reserve are rinsing fringes , brackish water reeds , salt marshes and cliffs. In the east of the area there are sandy grasslands with felt herbs or Dillenius speedwell .

The island Beuchel is an important breeding places for many species of birds, such as ducks , geese , swans , mergansers , waders , gulls and river and sandwich tern . The Neuendorfer Wiek protects the island from disorders and is also of great importance as breeding grounds for other species such as grebes , Bless Rail , pochard , marsh harrier , reed warbler , beard and Beutelmeise . In autumn and spring resting birds use the areas as resting, resting and feeding areas with sometimes thousands of individuals. White-tailed eagles , cranes and otters are found in the area. The nature reserve serves as a reproduction area for the fish fauna .
